Pete Davidson is sharing how his mother’s words inspired him to stay sober.

In an appearance on comedian Theo Von’s podcast This Past Weekend With Theo Von on Tuesday, Sept. 23, the Saturday Night Live alum spoke on his close bond with his mother Amy – and how she inspired him to stay sober.

“She’s been the most supportive ever. It got to a point where she called me when I was in rehab and she was like, ‘My biggest fear is that I will turn on the news and see that my son has died,’ ” Davidson said.

“And she’s never been like that, you know, because she’s so supportive and just wants to always have positivity around,” Davidson, 31, shared.

“Yeah. And she already lost something she loved,” Von, 45, added, referencing Davidson’s late father Scott Davidson, a New York City firefighter who died on 9/11.

“Exactly. And that f—— killed me. So like I was like, ‘Alright, you can’t die until she’s dead at least,’ ” Davidson said. “My mom’s the most supportive person in the world. She’s a cool lady. The best.”

“I want to marry a nurse,” Von joked, after a photo of Davidson’s mother was projected onscreen.

“Look how cute my mom is. She’s just a sweet lady. She never dated after my dad died. Just raised me and my sister alone and worked hard,” Davidson added.

When Von complimented Davidson’s close bond with his family, the SNL alum replied, “I’m a lucky guy in that aspect. I have a really supportive, cool family that has never asked me for anything. And they should [and] they could and they don’t, and a lot of them need stuff.”

The comedian and actor has long been open about his sobriety journey and his mental health. In July 2024, Davidson checked into a wellness facility, a year after he had previously sought treatment to address issues related to PTSD and borderline personality disorder.

Davidson has also begun the lengthy process of removing his tattoos, which he detailed to Variety in April.

“I used to be a drug addict and I was a sad person, and I felt ugly and that I needed to be covered up,” Davidson told the outlet. “So I’m just removing them and starting fresh, because that’s what I think works best for me and for my brain.”

He continued, “When I look in the mirror, I don’t want the reminder of ‘Oh yeah, you were a f—— drug addict. Like, that’s why you have SpongeBob smoking a joint on your back.’ They should have meaning. Not just that I was high watching Game of Thrones.”

The comedian revealed that he has to plan his tattoo removal sessions “between work because it’s a six-week healing process each time you get one removed.” He also explained a single tattoo removal takes 10 to 12 sessions and totals 60 weeks, meaning that the entire process is “gonna take me another 10 years.”
