Plane Skids Off Oregon Runway, Ends Up in Bay: See the Dramatic Photos

A private plane skidded off a runway and ended up in an Oregon bay on Monday, April 7, according to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) statement.

Around 6:10 a.m. on Monday, a 2019 HondaJet HA-420 plane was attempting to land at Southwest Oregon Regional Airport in North Bend, Ore., but “ran off the end of the runway,” per the FAA. It then skidded 100 feet off the airport’s Runway 23 and into Coos Bay, according to KSL.com.

The aircraft departed from the St. George Regional Airport in St. George, Utah, at 5:07 a.m. local time, per FlightAware.

The plane was carrying a pilot and four passengers. All five people were rescued and transported to Bay Area Hospital with minor injuries. Two patients were discharged, one patient was admitted, another was transferred to a different hospital, and the fifth patient was still being evaluated as of Monday afternoon, per ABC 9.

The plane was removed from the water by 10 a.m., per ABC 9.

Crews are working to contain a hazardous materials incident related to the plane incident. The Southwest Oregon Regional Airport operations paused briefly but have since resumed.

The FAA is investigating the incident.

“There was actually a witness that witnessed the plane going off the end of the runway, so a call was made to emergency responders,” said Stephanie Kilmer, a Coos County Airport District (CCAD) representative, per ABC 9. CCAD oversees the Southwest Oregon Regional Airport operations.

“This is where training and where our constant requirements, which afford us to have a mass casualty training, come into play. Everything worked smoothly like clockwork and those people were taken off the plane,” she continued. “I am just very proud of our crews that work tirelessly to train for incidents. So if something is to happen, we have the capacity to deal with that.”

Kilmer reassured the public that air travel “is still the safest way to travel.”
