Police Investigate as Woman Arrives Home to Find Critically Injured Stranger ‘Crying’ on Her Couch: Reports

Police are investigating after a woman in Virginia arrived home to find an injured man, who was later pronounced dead, inside her property, authorities have said.

On Thursday, March 27 at 9:50 p.m. local time, dispatchers from the Fauquier County Emergency Communications Center received a call from a homeowner in the 13000 block of John Marshall Highway reporting that she “arrived at her residence and discovered an injured man inside her home,” per a Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office (FCSO) news release shared on Facebook.

The post confirmed the Criminal Investigations Division (CID) was “investigating a suspicious death that occurred east of Linden, Virginia.” The incident occurred in Warrenton, which is approximately 50 miles from Washington, D.C.

“FCSO patrol deputies rendered first aid until Emergency Medical Services arrived and transported the man to the Winchester Medical Center. He was later pronounced deceased,” police added.

The woman reportedly discovered the man lying on her couch with “several wounds,” Fox 5 Washington D.C. reported, citing officials. The outlet added that there was “blood everywhere,” and that the woman “took a few steps in her home before turning around” and calling police after realizing there was somebody inside.

She’d “noticed her car port door was open,” Fox 5 noted.

The woman said, “I never saw him. I just heard a man crying… I hadn’t turned the lights on, and I could tell somebody was on the sofa, and it looked like they had a blanket that I keep there on the sofa pulled over them,” the outlet reported.

The man’s identity has not been released. He’s not thought to have been from the area and officials are “working to determine” whether he was “the victim of a crime,” per The Independent, citing an FCSO spokesperson.

Anyone with information is being asked to contact the sheriff’s office.

The Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office didn’t immediately respond when contacted by PEOPLE for additional information.
