Teen Mom star Mackenzie McKee shared that she rapidly gained 20 pounds of water weight while pregnant with twins.
“Over the past 48 hours my body has taken a rapid turn of preeclampsia symptoms. I have gained 20 pounds in 48 hours of water weight,” McKee, 30, said in a Snapchat video uploaded on Wednesday, May 28. “So I was looking at my feet, ankles and legs and I just started seeing them get bigger and bigger and bigger throughout the day. And then it got to a point where I can’t walk.”
McKee explained that her condition got to the point where she needed help putting her clothes on, using the bathroom and showering.
“I am not in good shape and that’s on top of the pain of the contractions,” she recalled.

McKee opted to do an at-home blood pressure test and read that the top number was 158, which is high. She called her doctor’s office to inform them of her situation and they advised her to come in. After going in, her blood pressure lowered to “120 or 130 maybe 140.” McKee also got bloodwork and urine tests done and the doctor told her she has protein in her urine.
The doctor diagnosed her with preeclampsia, which is a pregnancy complication that can cause high blood pressure and signs of organ damage after 20 weeks of pregnancy, per the Mayo Clinic.
While the doctor explained preeclampsia complications, McKee feels “confident” about delivering two healthy babies.
“I made it 31 weeks with twins. I was a Type 1 diabetic and the twins are measuring in the 97th percentile so they are big,” she reflected. “I know 31 weeks is soon but I’m also proud that we made it this far and very confident that the babies will be fine.”
While in the hospital, McKee waited a few hours for next steps. According to the MTV personality, there was a shift change and she ended up meeting with a new doctor who needed to be filled in on her situation. After telling the professional she was diagnosed with preeclampsia, McKee claimed that the second doctor told her it “wasn’t bad enough” for them to take the babies now. However, the medical professional would call for another doctor who specializes in high risk pregnancies to check on her the next day.
“I’m very defeated. I felt like I was getting somewhere and then took 10 steps back,” she said. “It amazes me they want you to cook twins as long as possible no matter what condition you’re in.”
After giving the choice to either stay in the hospital and wait for the new doctor or go home and come back the next day, McKee opted to head back to her house.
“I have a choice of staying in a hospital overnight and talking to a doctor tomorrow or going home and talking to a doctor tomorrow,” she said. “So obviously I’m going to choose the comfort of my own home and also that’s a hefty bill.”
In March, McKee announced her pregnancy while appearing on The Drew Barrymore Show.
“No one knows I’m pregnant but I am,” McKee shared. “There’s two in there.”
McKee and fiancé Khesanio Hall had been trying to get pregnant and used IVF to expand their family. McKee, who fans first met on 16 & Pregnant in 2011 and Teen Mom 3 in 2013, is also mom to Gannon, 13, Jaxie, 11, and Broncs, 8, with ex Josh McKee.
