Prince William’s Friend Sunjay Kapur Dead at 53 After Swallowing a Bee During Polo Match: Reports

Prince William’s friend Sunjay Kapur died on Thursday, June 12, after collapsing during a match at Guards Polo Club in Windsor, England, according to multiple outlets. He was 53.

The Telegraph reported on Friday, June 13, that Kapur “fell ill” during the polo match. His polo team was playing the Sujan Indian Tigers in the subsidiary final of the Queen’s Cup. According to the outlet, witnesses said they heard Kapur say, “I’ve swallowed something” during the medical episode.

The Mirror reported that Kapur is believed to have swallowed a bee, “potentially triggering anaphylactic shock that caused his heart to stop.”

Per the Mayo Clinic, “a small percentage of people who are stung by a bee or other insect develop anaphylaxis. It usually happens 15 minutes to an hour after the sting. Symptoms include rash, itching, trouble breathing, swollen tongue, trouble swallowing and tightness in the chest.”

An insider told The Mirror that Kapur “was full of life, laughing, joking, then gone in an instant.”

A friend of the billionaire businessman shared a statement with Telegraph Sport, saying, “He will be greatly missed not only by his family and friends but the local community around his club, as he employed so many people and made so many friends — he was fun, kind and generous. He didn’t distinguish between his grooms or high net worth friends — when he had a party, everyone was invited and everyone was equal.”

Kapur was the chairman of Sona Comstar, an automotive systems supplier and manufacturer. The company shared a statement on his death.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden demise of our Chairman, Mr. Sunjay Kapur. He was a visionary leader whose passion, insight and dedication shaped the identity and success of our company,” the statement said.

Hours before Kapur’s death, he shared a post on X to mourn those who lost their lives in the Air India plane crash, which killed 241 passengers on board. The plane was headed for London’s Gatwick Airport before it crashed just shortly after taking off in Ahmedabad, Western India. There was one survivor.

“Terrible news of the tragic Air India crash in Ahmedabad. My thoughts and prayers are with all the families affected. May they find strength in this difficult hour. #planecrash,” Kapur wrote on X in the early hours of Thursday, June 12.

Kapur was previously married to Bollywood actress Karisma Kapoor from 2003 to 2016. They shared two children, daughter Samaira, 20, and son Kiaan, 14. He also shared son Azarias, 6, with wife Priya Sachdev.
