Redditor Kept a Coke Bottle with Late Mom’s Name on It in the Fridge for Years. Then a Friend Accidentally Drank It

Well, there goes the “memorial Coke.”

In a post on Reddit’s “Today I F—– Up” (TIFU) forum, a Redditor recalled the time their friend accidentally drank the Coke they had been saving for over a decade because it had their late mother’s name on it.

“About ten years ago, my mom died unexpectedly,” the social media user wrote. “At that time in the US, Coke Cola was running this ‘Share a Coke’ ad campaign. Basically, they printed a bunch of labels on their bottles that said ‘Share a Coke with *Person’s Name*.”

“The day after she passed, I happened to come across a bottle with my mom’s name on it. Her name isn’t that common, so I took as one of those ‘she’ll always be with you’ kind of moments,” the Redditor added.

After returning home, the Redditor stuck it in the refrigerator, because “that’s where you put Coke?” Plus, since they didn’t really like the soda, “there wasn’t any risk of me accidentally drinking it.”

10 years, 2 moves and 3 refrigerators later, the coke was still there — then, a college friend came to town.

“Since his flight got delayed, I ran to the store to pick up some stuff for him. He likes Coke, so one of the things I grab is a six pack of Coke which I stick in the fridge,” the Redditor explained.

“Since I’m not consciously thinking about my Mom’s weird memorial death Coke on a daily basis, I don’t mention to him when I tell him ‘there’s a Coke in the fridge,’ ” the Redditor continued.

Well, 10 minutes later, they were sitting together as the friend had a soda. “While we’re talking, I happen to notice my mom’s name on the side of the bottle and gasp. Then, out of shock, I start laughing hysterically,” the Redditor said.

It ended up taking “solid five minutes” to explain the mishap, as the friend came to the “slow realization of why his Coke tasted so flat and [was] understandably horrified.”

Although the Redditor suggested the friend “finish the Coke” ultimately they decided it was best to dump the rest of the drink down the drain.

“I’m still keeping empty bottle and my friend is now laughing with me about the whole thing,” the Redditor wrote, before adding, “I get the sense that he’ll probably get a hotel if he’s in town again though.”

The majority of social media users who responded to the story left supportive replies.

“I’m so glad this wasn’t a ‘my heart is crushed and the friendship is definitely over’ story,” one commenter wrote, while another added, “You poured one out for the homies… your mom being the homie in this case.”

Another suggested that maybe what happened was a sign.

“This is a really wholesome story. I’m glad you got a laugh,” read the comment. “Probably your Mom was telling you it was time to clean out your fridge.”
