Richard E. Grant was among the stars of 1997’s Spice World, and decades later, he still has his mementos from the film
The actor told PEOPLE that he got to keep all of his costumes from the fan-favorite, which starred the Spice Girls
He recently pulled a look from the archives for his daughter’s birthday party
Richard E. Grant was as surprised as Spice World fans were by how good he looked in his costume from the 1997 movie.
Earlier this year, the Saltburn star shared photos on Instagram of himself and daughter Olivia celebrating at her prom-themed 36th birthday party. In the pics, Grant donned the same purple jewel tone shirt, tie and slacks he wore as the Spice Girls’ fictional manager Clifford in Spice World.
In the post’s caption, the actor revealed that the ensemble had been “zipped up” in his attic for the past 28 years.
“It fit astonishingly,” Grant told PEOPLE at the SXSW Film & TV Festival premiere of his new film Death of a Unicorn in Austin, Texas. “So, I was amazed.”
In his January Instagram post, Grant also wrote that his daughter personally insisted that he bring the purple suit out of retirement.
“I was offered the role when she was 8, and her excitement about meeting the Spice Girls is something I will never forget!” he wrote.

At the Death of a Unicorn premiere, Grant told PEOPLE that one of his fondest memories from making Spice World was getting the chance to introduce Olivia to Posh, Scary, Baby, Sporty and Ginger.
“My 8-year-old daughter was off-the-charts excited because she worshiped the Spice Girls and they were at the height of their fame,” he said. “So being able to take her to the set and get to know all of them was an incredible thrill.”
Grant also revealed that the purple suit isn’t the only Spice World costume he took home. While he said he doesn’t usually get to keep the clothes he wears in his films — “Most of them are made or hired, so they belong to the costume company,” he explained — Clifford’s eye-catching monochrome wardrobe was a different story.
“On Spice World they said, ‘We will give you all your costumes,’ ” Grant recalled. “So I’ve got all of them in my attic.”
Death of a Unicorn is available to rent on streaming platforms now.
