Rose Leslie is looking back on the early days of her romance with husband Kit Harington.
The couple had met before working together on season 2 of Game of Thrones — Leslie joined the series as Ygritte, a love interest for Harington’s character, Jon Snow — but it was their time filming the show together in Iceland that changed their dynamic.
In an interview on BBC Radio 2, Leslie, 39, reflected on the time she and her now-husband spent filming the series and how things turned romantic afterward.
“We found ourselves in such a beautiful bubble,” she said of the weeks they spent filming in Iceland in 2011. “We were in an abandoned hotel that, essentially, HBO rented out for the entire crew. So let’s say it’s a crew of 80 of us, just running around this lovely hotel.”

They were “in the middle of nowhere,” but near their hotel was a hill, “and when the Northern Lights appeared, just as a mass, we would go out and just stand beneath this beautiful dome of light.”
“So there were elements of it being very romantic,” Leslie said. “It was a really lovely job. Everybody was so delightful. In your head, you’re a bit like, oh, well, this is cracking writing, a wonderful story, and I felt very lucky.”
Harington, 39, similarly said in a 2016 interview that it was in Iceland that he “fell in love” with Leslie, and he, too, referenced the “magical” Northern Lights they saw.
“If you’re already attracted to someone, and then they play your love interest in the show, it becomes very easy to fall in love,” he told L’Uomo Vogue.

The pair got engaged in 2017 and tied the knot the following year in Scotland. They are now parents of two after welcoming a son in 2021 and a daughter in 2023. “I have a boy and a girl now. I couldn’t be more blessed. They are the most beautiful children in every single way. They are just gorgeous,” he told Extra in 2024.
“Fatherhood happened at just the right time, and I think I’m good at being a dad,” he told Mr Porter earlier this year. “I’m in a weird moment in my life where, at 39, I’m the same age my mum was when she had me. And I’m in charge of these two. I’m midway through my life … I feel very grounded.”
