Ryan Reynolds has had a “lifelong obsession” with the late John Candy.

At a special presentation of the new documentary John Candy: I Like Me, the 48-year-old actor, who co-produced the film, revealed that all three of his Deadpool movies are infused with Easter eggs dedicated to the legendary comedian, who died at 43 from a heart attack in 1994.

“I’ve always found something weirdly familiar with him, and he shows up in all of my work,” Reynolds said at the Sept. 24 event in Philadelphia.

Among these Easter eggs, the father of four shared, is The Canadian Mounted book that Candy’s character Del Griffith reads in the 1987 movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

As a tribute to his comedic idol, Reynolds has Wade Wilson holding or reading the same book in 2016’s Deadpool, 2018’s Deadpool 2 and 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine.

The John Candy: I Like Me documentary, which was released on Prime Video on Oct. 10, highlights scenes from Deadpool 2, when Wade gives a version of Del’s “I Like Me” speech inspired by Candy’s flick, as well as from Deadpool & Wolverine, when an “I Like Me” coffee mug is featured.

At the documentary event, Reynolds also told the live audience that another scene from Deadpool & Wolverine, where Hugh Jackman’s character Wolverine “has a huge diatribe” and “rips Wade Wilson a new a——,” was influenced by Candy’s Planes, Trains and Automobiles.

“The scene where Neal Page at the Braidwood Inn just goes after Del Griffith,” Reynolds explained of the character Steve Martin played.

John Candy: I Like Me is available to stream on Prime Video.
