Sami Sheen is reflecting on her rocky relationship with dad Charlie Sheen.
“My whole childhood, I want to say like the first 13 years, my dad was very in and out of my life,” Sami, 21, said on the Monday, April 14, episode of Gia Giudice’s “Casual Chaos” podcast. “It was the worst if we had an event and he said he was going to show up and then we wouldn’t hear from him or he would show up, like, 10 hours late. So we kind of just stopped asking him to come to stuff.”
Sami alleged that if Charlie, 59, showed up and they were “lucky enough to see him,” he was “most likely under the influence of something.”
“It’s sad but I make humor out of it,” she said. “I literally cannot tell you one memory from my childhood of him where he’s been sober. Which is kind of sad, but whatever, it’s his choice.”

L.A. baby! Charlie Sheen and Denise Richards’ oldest daughter, Sami Sheen, has always been in the spotlight — and now she’s making headlines for her grown up choices. The Anger Management alum and the Love Actually actress welcomed Sami in 2004, nearly two years after tying the knot in June 2002. The pair expanded their […]
Sami is the eldest daughter of Charlie and Denise Richards, who were married from 2002 to 2006. The exes are also parents to daughter Lola, 19. (Richards, 54, adopted Eloise, 13, in 2011.)
When asked whether her parents’ split was a “difficult time,” Sami claimed that she doesn’t “remember.”
“My mom hid so much stuff from me. Like there was one year, I was, like, asking where my dad was on Christmas. My mom told us he was skiing, but he was actually in jail,” Sami claimed. “I don’t know if he actually went to jail or if he was on his way to jail. Something with him in jail, but I thought he was skiing. And I was like, ‘That’s weird. My dad doesn’t even know how to ski.’ But I was so young. So I really don’t have that many memories of stuff when I was younger. And I think my mom did a really good job of, kind of, hiding stuff.”
Sami alleged that she doesn’t “know the whole story” but claimed her dad was not in jail for “long at all.” (Charlie was arrested in Colorado in December 2009 on second-degree assault, menacing and criminal mischief in an alleged dispute with then-wife Brooke Mueller, USA Today reported. The next year, Charlie pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge and was ordered to spend 30 days in rehab as part of the plea deal. The two other charges were dropped. He was also ordered to three months probation and 36 hours of domestic violence counseling.)
Sami claimed that the parents of her friends would sometimes not allow them into her family home because of Charlie.
“That was pretty hard,” she said. “But it was honestly, it was all I knew. It would have been a lot harder if I went from having a perfect family and then all of a sudden he’s a crazy drug addict and we don’t get to see him. So it kind of helps that it’s all I know, but it still sucks.”
Aside from her friends, Sami alleged that Charlie’s actions affected her admission into certain high schools.
“No high school would accept me because of, like, stuff my dad has posted in the past about like previous schools that I went to. So that was one thing where I still hold a grudge,” Sami said. “I mean, everything happens for a reason, but yeah, that one was really difficult, like, how it affected even the schools I was able to go to.”

Family drama! Denise Richards has had some turbulent times parenting her daughter Sami after she moved in with dad Charlie Sheen. “Obviously, I would love for her to live with me,” the 50-year-old actress said in February 2022 on an episode of the “Jeff Lewis Has Issues” podcast. “She lived with me all these years, […]
She continued, “I was just like, ‘Why are they not accepting my applications? Like I have straight A’s, I’m a great student.’ I remember my mom had to write a letter on his behalf and, like, try everything she could to get us into these schools, but I had no idea until later on. I’m like, ‘So that’s why I did not get in.’ And, like, it honestly is really nice hearing that it wasn’t my fault that I didn’t get in.”
Richards, for her part, weighed in on her girls’ relationship with their father during an exclusive interview with Us Weekly in March.
“It’s been [complicated] from day one and both girls are finding their path in the relationship and that’s OK,” Richards shared before the premiere of Denise Richards and Her Wild Things. “Things can be up and down, but you can always get through it.”
