Sandra Oh Reveals Whether She Ever Watches Grey’s Anatomy Reruns

NEED TO KNOW

  • Sandra Oh shared whether she watches reruns of Grey’s Anatomy
  • Oh, who portrayed Cristina Yang, left the show in 2014 after 10 seasons
  • The actress recently looked back at her time on the show at the Gold House 4th Annual Gold Gala

Don’t expect Sandra Oh to be cuing up old episodes of Grey’s Anatomy in her free time.

The award-winning actress, who starred as the beloved Cristina Yang for 10 seasons, recently revealed she doesn’t watch reruns of the hit series.

“I gotta tell you, I’ve put that gently aside,” she told PEOPLE at the Gold House 4th Annual Gold Gala earlier this month.

Oh, who earned five Emmy nominations and a Golden Globe for her work on Grey’s Anatomy, hasn’t returned to the show since her departure in 2014 and, over the years, has been adamant about her decision not to come back.

The character, however, has remained a part of the story through onscreen mentions, phone calls and written correspondences with other characters. Cristina notably showed up to support her best friend Meredith Grey (Ellen Pompeo) at the funeral for her husband Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), though a body double for Oh was used in the scene.

Kevin McKidd, who plays Owen Hunt on Grey’s Anatomy, previously told PEOPLE he wants Oh to return because he believes their characters, who were former spouses, have “a lot of history there they would have to talk about” and that it would make for “really great television.”

McKidd said he thinks a conversation between Owen and Cristina would be “complicated because there’s such a love” between them, coupled with the fact that they “didn’t really get a proper goodbye with each other.”

Oh was one of the original stars of Grey’s Anatomy when it premiered in 2005, alongside the likes of Pompeo, Katherine Heigl, Justin Chambers, T.R. Knight, Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr., Isaiah Washington and Dempsey.

Of those original stars, only Pompeo, Wilson and Pickens Jr. remain on the show today.

Since she exited Grey’s Anatomy, Oh has starred on series like American Crime, The Chair, Invincible and Killing Eve, the latter of which earned her a Golden Globe for her role as Eve Polastri.

She has also starred in movies like Catfight, Raya and the Last Dragon, Turning Red, Umma and Quiz Lady, for which she was awarded an Emmy.

Grey’s Anatomy, the longest-running primetime medical drama in television history, recently concluded its 21st season and returns for season 22 this fall on ABC.
