When it comes to date night, expect to find Sara Bareilles and her fiancé, Joe Tippett, checking out a show on Broadway.
While speaking to PEOPLE during the opening night of Real Women Have Curves: The Musical at the James Earl Jones Theatre in New York City on Sunday, April 27, the singer-songwriter dished on what a typical evening out looks like for the couple.
“Well, we actually do go to a lot of theater,” Bareilles, 45, says. “It’s one of our favorite things to do.”
When asked if she had a favorite musical, the performer quipped, “Waitress,” before adding that she was “just kidding.”
Of course, music and theater fans alike know that Bareilles wrote the music and lyrics for a Broadway adaptation of the 2007 small-town dramedy originally starring Keri Russell. The hit production earned four Tony Award nominations, including one for Bareilles for Best Original Score.

She also earned acclaim for her turn on stage as one of Jessie Mueller’s replacements in the lead role of Jenna — opposite of Tippett, who replaced Nick Cordero. The pair also star in a version of the production that was filmed for the screen and is now streaming on Max.
As for Tippett, 43, and Bareilles’ Sunday night out on the Great White Way, the performer shared they were excited to see Real Women Have Curves, which is an adaptation of Josefina López’s play and stars Justina Machado (One Day at a Time).
According to a synopsis for the musical, the show is set in the summer of 1987 and tells the story of a young woman who has dreams of leaving East Los Angeles before her family receives an order for 200 dresses and then must juggle her own ambitions with her family’s needs while she and other women try to make it work against all odds.
“We’re out catching yet another brilliant new offering with lots of friends involved,” Bareilles says of the production, adding that they were “very excited” about seeing the show.
Bareilles and the Mare of Easttown star, meanwhile, are preparing for a special day of their own as the two plan to tie the knot in 2025.
“We are getting married this year,” Bareilles told PEOPLE in February, revealing that she and Tippett recently made “a few major decisions” in their planning.
While Bareilles may have been joking about Waitress being her favorite musical, it was during the show’s pre-Broadway run at the American Repertory Theater in Cambridge, Mass. in 2015 when the couple first met.
The two eventually got engaged in December 2022 while vacationing together in Mexico City.
“This project brought me my future husband, which is really a beautiful thing,” Bareilles said of the musical. “It’s very special to get to share the stage with Joe.”
