And while her absence was notable, she explained her decision to not appear at those public events isn’t a reflection of her 32-year marriage.

“If I were having problems with my husband, everybody would know about it,” she shared on the April 30 episode of Steven Bartlett’s Diary of a CEO podcast. “And let me tell you, and he would know it and everybody would know it. I’m not a martyr. I’m not. And I would be problem-solving in public, and be like, ‘Let me tell you what he did.’”

The former first lady echoed a similar sentiment in April, noting her choice to not attend any presidential-related events shouldn’t cause such an uproar.

“When I say ‘no,’ for the most part people are like, ‘I get it,’” Michelle said on Sophia Bush’s Work in Progress podcast that month. “That’s the thing. We, as women, struggle with disappointing people. This year, people couldn’t even fathom that I was making a choice for myself that they had to assume that my husband and I are divorcing.”
