Selena Gomez Says Comments About Her Weight Make Her Feel ‘A Tad Bitter’

Selena Gomez opened up about the toll that ongoing discussion around her weight has taken on her.

During an appearance on the Monday, March 24, episode of the “On Purpose” podcast hosted by Jay Shetty, Gomez, 32, spoke candidly about the continuing body commentary she faces online.

“Everyone just has something to say and it’s really making me sad and — not even sad ‘cause, I’m not a victim, everyone — I just think it’s made me a tad bitter and I feel really guilty for saying that but it’s true,” Gomez told Shetty, 37, while being interviewed alongside her fiancé, Benny Blanco.

The Only Murders In the Building star, who spoke publicly in February 2023 about how the lupus medication she’s on can cause weight fluctuation, added that she tries to avoid reading about herself online — but sometimes, comments can slip through. “So many different things that come up in my face, that I can’t help but see,” she explained. “I fall victim to looking at things.”

Gomez, who got engaged to Blanco, 37, in December 2024 after 18 months of dating, added that she is also subjected to criticism due to her professional choices. Touching on her recent role in Emilia Pérez during the podcast, Gomez said, “It’s the character that gets judged. It’s the way I’m not white enough, I’m not Mexican enough.”

She noted, “Nobody cares about those kinds of things with men.”

This is not the first time Gomez has hit back at online criticism, particularly surrounding her weight. During her February 2023 TikTok Live video that detailed the medication she administers for lupus, a chronic autoimmune disease described by Mayo Clinic as “when your body’s immune system attacks your own tissues and organs,” Gomez reiterated the importance of staying healthy.

“I tend to hold a lot of water weight and that happens very normally. And then when I’m off of [my medication], I tend to lose weight,” she said in the clip at the time. “I just wanted to say and encourage anyone out there who feels any sort of shame for exactly what they’re going for and nobody knows the real story — I just want people to know that you’re beautiful and you’re wonderful and, yeah, maybe we have days where we feel like s— but I would much rather be healthy and take care of myself.”

Gomez was first diagnosed with lupus in 2014 and three years later, she underwent a kidney transplant, with longtime friend Fransia Raisa donating an organ to her.
