For soccer star Sophia Wilson and her husband, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Michael Wilson, “life just keeps getting sweeter.”
On Wednesday, March 5, Sophia and Michael announced they are expecting their first baby in a post shared via Instagram alongside photos of the pair showing off images of a recent sonogram.
According to USA Today, Sophia and Michael met in 2018 while they were freshmen at Stanford University.
Seven years later, Sophia and Michael wed in January. Now, they are preparing to be parents.
In November 2024, Sophia told the Cardinals that aside from being one of the best soccer players in the world, she feels like it’s her “calling, to be a mom.”
“My career, it has to stop for a period of time when I am pregnant so that’s not something we can just let happen at any moment,” she said at the time. “[But] we’ve been patient for a long time.”

As Portland Thorns FC’s season is set to begin this month, that pause in her career has begun — and it’s fully supported by her team.
The soccer team shared its own congratulatory message on X.
“Our Number 9+1,” the team wrote on X. “We are overjoyed to share that [Sophia Smith] and her husband Michael are expecting their first child! The Thorns are proud to support her through this incredible new chapter.”

In that same interview, the couple talked about how their relationship survives the long stretches of time apart due to their work schedules.
“It always comes back to we’re going to see it through regardless,” Michael noted. “She is the most special person I’ve ever been around, and knowing we’re together keeps me humble and grounded because I know I’ll never find another person like her again.”
