A man in New York is accused of beating and choking his 75-year-old mother during an argument — and prosecutors say he yelled, "Why aren't you dying?" at her during the incident.
According to the Nassau County Police Department, 37-year-old John Strano was arrested and charged on Wednesday, April 1, after a woman reported being attacked inside a home in the Long Island neighborhood of Williston Park.
When officers arrived at the home, the woman said that she had been in an argument with Strano when he allegedly became violent, pushing her to the ground and slamming her head into the floor, per police. Strano then allegedly punched her and struck her with a blunt metal object — which prosecutors later said was a metal clamp, per News 12.
"Strano then choked the victim before he fled the scene," police said.

Speaking in court, prosecutors alleged that Strano struck his mother on the back of the head more than three dozen times using the metal clamp, per News 12. He also allegedly admitted to police that during the attack, he yelled at his mother, "Why aren't you dying?" and, "Why are you still breathing?"
Strano was eventually located by police more than a mile away from the initial scene at a local elementary school and was arrested on the baseball field after school had been out for the day.
Police said he was placed under arrest without incident and taken to an area hospital for an evaluation.

Strano has been charged with second-degree attempted murder, two counts of second-degree assault, criminal obstruction of breathing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon. According to the local outlet, he pleaded not guilty and was remanded.
