NEED TO KNOW
- The Stranger Things season 5 finale will play in select theaters across the U.S. and Canada
- The show’s last episode will screen on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1
- The first four episodes of Stranger Things season 5 premiered on Netflix on Nov. 26
The Upside Down is about to take over your local multiplex with a special screening of the Stranger Things season 5 finale.
The first four episodes of the latest installment premiered on Netflix on Nov. 26, with four more to follow later this month. The next three episodes will drop on Dec. 25, followed by the finale, which will premiere on the streaming platform and in theaters on Dec. 31.
Stranger Things co-creator Matt Duffer revealed to The Hollywood Reporter that “initially,” special screenings of the finale weren’t “the plan at all.”
“Originally, the finale season was just going to be split into two volumes: Volume 1 and Volume 2,” he said. “After we were done filming, Netflix approached us with the idea of putting the finale on its own day, which we thought was cool because we thought it would allow us to pitch our movie theater idea.”
Matt continued, “What’s fun about seeing something in the theater, we think, is that everyone is experiencing it for the first time together. What we liked about this particular release pattern is that it allows that opportunity for a group of fans to sit and watch this unfold together.”
So, with the end of the sci-fi series quickly approaching, here’s everything to know about how to snag tickets to the Stranger Things season 5 finale in theaters.
Which Stranger Things season 5 episodes will be released in theaters?
Only one episode — the Stranger Things season 5 finale — will be released in theaters. According to Tudum, the screenings will take place at over 500 locations in the U.S. and Canada.
The episode, titled “The Rightside Up,” is the eighth installment of the fifth and final season. It will have a runtime of 2 hours and 5 minutes.
Stranger Things co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer told the outlet that they are “beyond excited that fans will have the chance to experience the final episode of Stranger Things in theaters.”
“It’s something we’ve dreamed about for years, and we’re so grateful to Ted [Sarandos], Bela [Bajaria], and everyone at Netflix for making it happen,” they said. “Getting to see it on the big screen, with incredible sound, picture, and a room full of fans, feels like the perfect — dare we say bitchin’ — way to celebrate the end of this adventure.”
When will the Stranger Things season 5 finale be in theaters?
The Stranger Things finale will be shown in theaters on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1.
On Dec. 31, the episode will screen at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT, the same time it will be released worldwide on Netflix. The following day, Jan. 1, there will be multiple screenings of the episode throughout the day.
Another reason the Duffer Brothers are excited for Stranger Things to finally hit theaters is that they will get to watch it with fans.
“We get to sneak into a theater and watch it with the fans, because otherwise you’re just going off TikTok and YouTube videos or whatever,” Matt told The Hollywood Reporter. “We’ve never had that experience before, so we’re excited. It’s also going to sound and look better.”
How can I get tickets for Stranger Things season 5 finale in theaters?
Tickets for the Stranger Things finale went on sale on Dec. 2.
Tickets are available through Fandango, AMC, Regal and other theater websites. There is also a dedicated website — ST5Finale.com — which lists the closest location playing the special screening.
Producer and co-director Shawn Levy told Deadline that the finale “deservedly” belongs on the big screen.
How much are Stranger Things season 5 finale tickets?
Stranger Things season 5 finale tickets are actually concession vouchers, guaranteeing attendees a seat at the screenings.
Concession vouchers appear to be going for $11, seemingly a nod to Eleven. This way, theaters will keep the revenue from the showings, according to Variety.
Theaters owned by Netflix — like the Egyptian in Los Angeles and the Paris in New York City — will not be selling tickets or concession vouchers for the screenings, but fans can sign up to attend via an RSVP list, requesting a spot.
