Tamron Hall Says ‘There’s No Perfect Time’ to Become a Parent After Welcoming Son Moses at 48 (Exclusive)

Tamron Hall has no regrets about waiting until she was in her late 40s to become a mother.

“I don’t present myself as some kind of guru on the topic, but I truly believe that the timing is up to you. I think that there’s no perfect time,” Hall, 54, exclusively told Us Weekly on Monday, March 17, while promoting her debut Harlem Honey: The Adventures of a Curious Kid children’s book. “I think about what kind of mom I would’ve been at 27 [or] 37. That wasn’t the journey that was meant for me.”

The Tamron Hall Show host and her husband, Steven Greener, welcomed son Moses in 2019. Hall was 48 at the time.

“Often we think of us helping kids. We are giving them the tools to thrive, or we hope that we are, but … my son truly saved my life,” Hall explained to Us. “He gave me great perspective. There are things that in my 20s and my 30s, I’d be spiraling [over], but he’s given me great perspective — not just about work, but what really matters in life.”

She added, “I know that sounds cliché, and I’ve been on both sides. I tell people all the time, ‘My womanhood and my motherhood are two separate things.’ I was a non-mom for 48 years, but with Moses and this journey with him, he really has enriched my life to the point where I feel guilty that, ‘Wow, you’ve given me so much. I hope that I can give you just a little of that in return.’”

While Hall has found motherhood to overall be “wonderful” and “fun,” she’s also dealt with parenthood’s less exciting moments.

“There are days, of course, where it’s up and down. When I said to him, ‘We’re going on a tour book signing and I would love for you to go with me.’ He said, ‘I will help you set up the books, but I don’t want to sign the books,’” Hall recalled to Us. “With my studio, when we launched the Tamron Hall Show in 2019, I had a nursery in my dressing room. I was so excited. I didn’t want one minute of my life to be spent without him. He’s grown up on set, but he will say, ‘Mom, when the people leave, I’ll go in.’”

According to the talk show host, Moses, now 5, “loves looking at the lights” on the stage when there’s not a large crowd present.

“He loves the stage, but walking into a room of 200 adults who are strangers, it’s overwhelming,” Hall said. “We have worked to give him the words and empower him to have that, ‘I’m OK. I’m not ready.’ Everything is not for everybody. It’s a hard thing sometimes, and it’s a pressure cooker of a life that we can live.”

Tamron Hall’s unexpected departure from the Today show in 2017 surprised fans — and even surprised Hall herself. While speaking exclusively to Us Weekly on Monday, March 17, Hall admitted there were nerves over exiting the popular daytime show when she left. “People came to me and said, ‘You are so courageous,’” she explained. “And […]

Hall has also shared her words of wisdom about late motherhood with young individuals she mentors as they contemplate freezing their eggs or undergoing in vitro fertilization.

“I am inspired by the independence [and] I’m inspired by the fact that more companies than ever are actually covering the cost of IVF, covering the cost of freezing eggs and [people are] having these candid conversations,” Hall said. “We had a show recently dedicated to the real conversation of fertility, and … I had a young woman in her 30s sit and explain what it’s really like to freeze your eggs. A lot of people think it’s like going in and getting out. It’s a whole round of IVF without the fertilization of the egg. It’s not a walk in the park, and it’s not scary, if that’s your choice, but we glaze past it.”

She added, “I don’t know what having it all is. I don’t seek balance. I don’t think that’s a real thing. I seek joy and I think if your joy is the journey and the possibility of being a parent, find your joy.”

Hall was also inspired by her parenthood journey when she put pen to paper for her Harlem Honey children’s book.

“This book, inspired by my son, was meant really to bring in grandparents, aunts, uncles [and] people who have children in their lives that they love and maybe they’re not a parent,” she gushed. “It’s just an opportunity to collectively get together, have a great read, a sweet read, and talk about something that I think is very relatable.”

Hall even named her main character, Moses, after her only child.

“The first time I showed him the book, he said, ‘That’s me,’” Hall added. “So, the character is inspired by him both physically in the name — and also truly the heart and the spirit of it.”

Harlem Honey: The Adventures of a Curious Kid hits bookstore shelves Tuesday, March 25.
