Taylor Swift Has ‘Perfect Explanation’ for Ed Sheeran Discovering Her Engagement via Instagram. He Confirms: ‘Factual’

Taylor Swift has a perfectly good explanation for her good friend Ed Sheeran finding out about her engagement via Instagram.

During an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Monday, Oct. 6, the “Cruel Summer” singer played a game of That’s So True with the host — and she was asked to identify the truth among a series of rumors about her.

When Fallon, 51, guessed that Sheeran learned about her engagement to Travis Kelce “on Instagram” — Swift responded “that’s so true.”

“I have a perfect explanation,” the “Elizabeth Taylor” singer, 35, said.

“He doesn’t have a phone,” she added. “And this is one thing I love about him. It’s very eccentric. Love it. But when I’m going through saying, ‘Hey, who should we call? Who should we FaceTime?’ I’m going through my texts and being like, ‘Who have I texted within the last like, month of my life?'”

Then, the “Love Story” singer said he wasn’t there because she could only “email him” — and he has to find an iPad to set up a FaceTime call.

“This is one of my absolute favorite people on the planet,” Swift said. “Then, when the news came out I was like, ‘Oh my God we forgot to call Ed! Oh no!'”

She continued, “He’s like family. I love him. But he doesn’t have a phone!”

In a clip from the interview posted to the talk show’s TikTok, Sheeran, 34, wrote: “Hello from my allotted iPad time, this is factual.”

Sheeran revealed that he found out about the engagement through their Aug. 26 Instagram reveal during a discussion with Andy Cohen for SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series in September.

At the time, he also noted that he hadn’t gotten a “save-the-date” for the wedding.

Swift and Sheeran’s friendship began over a decade ago, in 2012, after he served as the opening act on her Red Tour. The album of the same name featured a collaboration between the two called “Everything Has Changed.”

During an appearance on the U.K.’s Hits Radio Breakfast Show on Oct. 3, Swift was asked if Sheeran would perform at her wedding.

“Oh it would be hard to keep him from it, I think!” she said. “That’s the thing, he’s like, ‘I’m always being asked to sing at weddings.’ It’s like, ‘Ed, if there is a stage, you know you’ll be on it.’ He knows what people want, and he wants to give people what they want.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the “Opalite” singer went on to open up about her bond with Sheeran.

“That’s the fun thing about our friendship is we both love performing, and we love writing and singing. We’re like, ‘Oh, don’t make me sing … alright!’ Up there explaining to the house band, you’re like ‘‘Shake It Off’ is three chords. We’re first verse starting here!’” said the musician. “But that’s the thing, we love what we do, we love to get up onstage, it’s actually not that hard at talking either of us into performing at anything.”
