Teddi Mellencamp is teaching her 10-year-old son how to take care of her wig after undergoing surgery for her brain tumors.
In an Instagram Story video shared on Sunday, March 9, Mellencamp’s son, Cruz, could be seen standing in front of a mirror with his mom’s wig on his head. Cruz smiled as he adjusted the wig, brushing pieces of hair away from his face with his hands.
“If you’re going to be on wig duty, you have to treat it really well, bud,” Mellencamp, 43, said as she recorded her son. (Mellencamp shares Cruz and daughters Slate, 12, and Dove, 5, with estranged husband Edwin Arroyave.)
After Mellencamp suggested that Cruz should put the wig “on its head,” her son walked into the bathroom to grab a mannequin head and placed the hair on top.
“She needs a good brushing. Let’s brush her, OK? The hair brush is right here,” Mellencamp said while opening a drawer to retrieve the hair tool. “Give her a nice little brush. We don’t know when we’re going to wear her again.”
As Cruz brushed the wig, he set the mannequin head on the counter of the bathroom and the hair slightly slipped off.
“Uh oh. Oh, no. Now her forehead … I can’t be looking around like that,” Mellencamp said while Cruz laughed.
Mellencamp shared in February that she had been experiencing “severe and debilitating headaches” for weeks, with the pain becoming “unbearable” and requiring hospitalization.

Teddi Mellencamp and estranged husband Edwin Arroyave’s son, Cruz, spent part of his school day hoping for her brain surgery recovery to be successful. “Cruz’s class made this for @teddimellencamp ❤️,” Arroyave, 47, wrote via Instagram Story on Thursday, February 13. “After a CT scan and MRI, doctors found multiple tumors on my brain, which they believe have been growing for at least 6 months. Two of the tumors will be surgically removed today. The remaining smaller tumors will be dealt with via radiation at a later date,” Teddi wrote via Instagram at the time.
She continued, “I am blessed to be surrounded by my children, family, friends, doctors, nurses and surgeons who are doing everything possible to get me back into better health. Thank you to everybody who has reached out, and to everyone who has supported me along this journey.”
Hours later, Mellencamp uploaded an Instagram Story video of her friend shaving off her hair. “I’m gonna have this look on my bucket list,” Teddi quipped at the time. “My best look. I hate to break it to my brother but once I’m allowed to wash my hair and it’s not all spiky, I think I’ve taken you for a run for your money, Hud. I’ll see you tomorrow and we’ll see who wore it best.”
After being hospitalized for over two weeks, Mellencamp shared the next month that she returned home. Days later, Mellencamp revealed that the doctors found more tumors throughout her body.
“I have multiple tumors in my brain that weren’t able to be removed via surgery. I also have 2 tumors in my lung. These are all metastases of my melanoma,” she wrote via Instagram on Thursday, March 6. “The doctors are hopeful that immunotherapy will effectively treat them. I am feeling positive — that I will win this battle, that I got this wig (I like the short hair, just not the bald spots), and that I can remember all of Angelina [Jolie]’s kids’ names.”
