One other passenger sustained serious injuries
A 16-year-old girl was killed in Tadcaster, England, on Monday, Dec. 1, according to a North Yorkshire Police news release.
Eleanor “Ellie” Hague was a passenger in a white Mercedes Sprinter minibus when the vehicle collided with a Hyundai i10 in Tadcaster, England, around 12:30 p.m. local time. (Tadcaster is 200 miles north of London.)
She was one of nine passengers, all of whom were students from Tadcaster Grammar School and Sherburn High School.
Emergency workers attempted to save Ellie; however, she died at the scene.
One of the other teen girls was transported to the hospital with serious injuries that are not considered life-threatening. The remaining passengers and the bus driver were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.
A 40-year-old woman from Leeds, England, was the Hyundai driver.
She has been arrested on two counts: suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury by dangerous driving. She is currently released on conditional bail.
Ellie’s school issued a statement on Tuesday, Dec. 2, sharing how the school is “deeply saddened” by the “tragic loss of one of our students.”
“Our heartfelt thoughts are with everyone affected by this unimaginable tragedy,” the statement continued. “We are totally committed to providing every member of our school community with unwavering support and empathy as we come together as one.”
Tadcaster Grammar School added that “appropriate support will be available” to all students and staff. The school was closed on Tuesday, Dec. 2, but is expected to reopen on Wednesday, Dec. 3.
North Yorkshire Council representative Kirsty Poskitt extended her “heartfelt condolences to the young people involved,” and Ellie’s family, the BBC reported. She added that it was “an incredibly sad day for our town.”
