A couple in Tennessee celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary by renewing their vows.
It was love at first sight for the couple, as Bill Bethmann recalled to WTVF, falling in love with his wife Charlotte in 1948 when he first saw a picture of her on his friend's dresser at a Florida Navy flight school.
Bill immediately thought it was his friend's girlfriend, but soon learned it was his friend's younger sister.
"As soon as I saw that picture on his desk, it was immediate. I knew I was going to try to marry that girl," recalled Bill to WTVF.
The two finally met when Charlotte visited a few weeks later, and the attraction was immediate.
Charlotte told WTVF that she thought "he's got the most beautiful smile, and I really thought he was the handsomest thing I'd ever seen."
It wasn't long until Bill, from Buffalo, New York, and Charlotte, from Franklin, Tennessee, got married in 1951.
To celebrate their 75th wedding anniversary, friends and residents at their assisted living center in Brookdale, Tullahoma, gathered to watch them renew their vows.
When asked by WTVF what they wanted to share ahead of the ceremony, Bill said that "love is the answer" and "love is always the answer."
"I don't know why our society can't realize that love is the answer," he continued. "Everyone we meet, we love. We've got to love them. The Lord has blessed us. I just wish people would understand that you've got to love people."
WTVF had footage of the ceremony, showing Pastor Kris Roberts of First Methodist Church of Tullahoma telling guests that they were there to "celebrate a beautiful and rare gift."
"This is 75 years of marriage shared by our friends Bill and Charlotte, a testimony of love that has endured, faith that has sustained, and a covenant that has withstood the test of time," he said. "Today we celebrate that journey, and we look forward with gratitude and hope."
