‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Brings June Back Together With Nick — Only for Him to Betray Her

The Handmaid’s Tale brought June and Nick back together with a reunion that felt too good to be true — because it was.

During the Tuesday, April 29, episode of the hit Hulu series, June (Elisabeth Moss) and Moira (Samira Wiley) were rescued by Commander Lawrence (Bradley Whitford), but their plan to escape wasn’t that easy. Lawrence took Moira to safety while June attempted to get back the letters Janine (Madeline Brewer) passed along from the other Jezebels, which were confiscated at the brothel.

June got in contact with Nick (Max Minghella), who rushed to help her. But when Nick was caught leaving Jezebel’s by Commander Bell (Timothy Simons), word got back to Rose’s (Carey Cox) father, Commander Wharton (Josh Charles).

While Nick initially planned to spend the night with June at his vacant home, Wharton’s decision to stay back for the night caused even more complications. Luckily, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski) took June in as they argued about whether New Bethlehem will really be better than Gilead.

In the morning, Nick came to pick up June, but they couldn’t get away before Wharton came to visit his fiancée, Serena. June and Nick overheard Wharton reveal that he closed down Jezebel’s thanks to a tip from Nick about a planned rebellion. June couldn’t do anything to stop the possible downfall of Janine and the others at the club after telling just about everyone in Gilead about the plan to kill all the commanders.

Janine’s fate, however, remained unclear after she started to prepare for a possible rescue. She had a brief but emotional scene when Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd) visited once again. Instead of thanking Lydia for yet another attempt to “help” her, Janine unleashed her frustration about how Lydia was at fault for Janine having to give her daughter, Charlotte/Angela, to Naomi (Ever Carradine).

The final season of The Handmaid’s Tale is expected to feature an uprising. But despite the sneak peek clips at the upcoming episodes, not even the cast know exactly what is to come.

Kristen Gutoskie, who played Beth, told Us earlier this month that she knows “nothing,” adding, “It’s all a mystery. We’re gonna all be watching it at the same time.”

Hulu After six seasons on Hulu, The Handmaid’s Tale will be wrapping up the story in 2025. Based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where low fertility rates have led women to be assigned to men for bearing children. Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline […]

Wiley, meanwhile, has played Moira since the series premiered in 2017 but also has “not seen a thing” yet. The same went for Simons, who told Us, “I haven’t read it. I wasn’t allowed to read it. I haven’t seen it.”

Executive producer Warren Littlefield teased that the show’s finale “really satisfying,” sharing, “Living in the world of Gilead for our audience is sometimes a tough journey. But I think their patience will be rewarded because this final year is ordinary women doing extraordinary things. The revolution is here and they’re highly effective. There’s joy. Is there still a Gilead? Yeah. But we celebrate what they accomplish and I think it’ll be very satisfying for the audience.”

Viewers shouldn’t expect to get all their questions answered, though.

“We are going to begin a journey right away with The Testaments. That is still a world that has Gilead. But it’s a completely different point of view,” he teased. “We will satisfy and really deliver triumphantly for our audience who’s been with us through six seasons of The Handmaid’s Tale. They will want and be curious to see more and see where The Testaments goes.”

New episodes of The Handmaid’s Tale air Tuesdays on Hulu.
