‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Wraps Production on Final Season After Lengthy Delay: ‘Coming Soon’

The wait for the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale is almost over as filming has officially wrapped.

O-T Fagbenle, who plays Luke on the Hulu series, took to Instagram on Monday, February 10, to share photos of himself with fellow cast members, writing, “THATS A WRAP on the final season of Handmaids! It’s coming soon! Any predictions?”

Season 6 has been years in the making. The last installment of episodes were released in late 2022 before the dual WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes caused a delay with the show’s return.

The Handmaid’s Tale, which premiered in 2017, is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name about a dystopian future. Due to low fertility rates, women are assigned to men for bearing children after a second American Civil War.

Elisabeth Moss, Yvonne Strahovski, Madeline Brewer, Ann Dowd, Fagbenle, Max Minghella and Samira Wiley have starred on the show since its debut. Over the years, the show has been a critical success, becoming the first show produced by Hulu to win a major award and the first series on a streaming network to win an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series.

Hulu has already confirmed that season 6, which is set to be released in this year, is the show’s last. The universe is expanding, though, with an adaptation of Atwood’s 2019 novel, The Testaments. It was previously announced that Hulu and MGM were developing the sequel series, but additional details have not been revealed.

Before production kicked off on season 6, The Handmaid’s Tale faced a shakeup when Bruce Miller — who has been with the series since the beginning — stepped down as showrunner. He remains a writer and executive producer but passed on his showrunning duties to executive producers Eric Tuchman and Yahlin Chang.

“We are ending our show on our own creative terms,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2022 before his departure. “Do I know what happens in season 6? Yes, I did think about the stuff that happens in season 6 for a while.”

Miller is now focused on bringing The Testaments to life. In Atwood’s follow-up novel, which is set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, three women recount what happened to Gilead after June (Moss) was taken and Aunt Lydia (Dowd) was revealed to be a mole for the resistance group Mayday.

“Although I could not continue with the story of Offred, I could continue with three other people concerned in these events and tell the story of the beginning of the end, because we know from The Handmaid’s Tale that Gilead vanishes,” Atwood told journalists at an event in 2019. “It’s no longer present 200 years into the future, because they’re having a symposium on it. How did it collapse? How do these kinds of regimes disappear? I was interested in exploring that.”

She continued: “There [are] some new costume choices in this book. Human beings throughout time love outfits that tell you who you’re looking at, like football teams and things like that. So yes, we have some new outfits.”

The Handmaid’s Tale is currently streaming on Hulu.
