The View’s Joy Behar Booed for Joke About Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Affair: ‘What?’

It’s been decades since Arnold Schwarzenegger cheated on Maria Shriver, but according to The View audience it’s still too soon for affair jokes.

Joy Behar learned that the hard way on Tuesday, April 29, while poking fun at Schwarzenegger’s affair during a debate about chiseled men vs. men who have more natural and round physiques.

“I like a chunky guy. I like a pot,” Behar, 82, told her fellow The View cohosts while discussing British singer Olly Murs’ recent body transformation.

Behar explained that if a man is shredded like Murs, 40, is now, then it creates similar expectations for their partners. “You have to be perfect if they’re perfect. I prefer a man who’s not perfect. I’m not perfect,” Behar said, teasing, “I like them to be legally blind even. That helps.”

The talk show host then joked, “I mean, if you get a guy like Arnold Schwarzenegger he’s going to leave you for the housekeeper anyway.” Behar was referring to Schwarzenegger’s famous bodybuilding physique and his affair with his and Shriver’s housekeeper, Mildred Baena, decades prior.

As the boos came in from the studio audience almost immediately, cohost Alyssa Farah quipped, “Too soon! It’s only been 30 years!”

Behar smiled after making the joke, but when she heard the crowd jeering asked, “What?!” After seeing a few supporters in the audience, Behar added, “Thank you. My girls up there get it!”

Whoopi Goldberg, meanwhile, managed to wrap up the topic and sent the show to commercial break as the boos finally subsided.

Schwarzenegger, 77, and Shriver, 69, were married for 25 years before they called it quits in 2011. Their divorce came after Shriver discovered that the Terminator actor fathered a child, Joseph Baena, with their longtime housekeeper, Mildred. (Joseph was born in 1997, the same year Shriver gave birth to her and Schwarzenegger’s youngest child, Christopher.)

“There are no excuses, and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused,” Schwarzenegger told the Los Angeles Times after news broke of his infidelity. “I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.”

Us Weekly confirmed in December 2021 that the I Am Maria author and Schwarzenegger finalized their divorce.

Despite their ups and downs, Shriver and Schwarzenegger have remained committed to coparenting their four children: Katherine, Christina, Patrick and Christopher Schwarzenegger.

“We are very proud of the way we raised our kids,” Arnold recalled to The Hollywood Reporter in May 2023. “Even though we had this drama, we did Easter together, Mother’s Day together, the Christmases together, all birthdays — everything together.”

That same year, the Kindergarten Cop actor opened up about the scandal in his Netflix docuseries, Arnold.

“I think that I have caused enough pain for my family because of my f*** up,” Arnold said. “Everyone had to suffer. Maria had to suffer. The kids had to suffer. Joseph. His mother. Everyone. … I am going to have to live with it the rest of my life.”

He noted that despite his mistake, he is “proud” of Joseph, 27, and their bond. “I don’t want to make Joseph feel that he is not welcomed in this world — because he is very much welcomed in this world,” Arnold concluded. “I love him, and he has turned out to be an extraordinary young man.”
