Timothée Chalamet’s Academy Award nomination puts him in some rare company.
On Thursday, Jan. 23, Chalamet, 29, received a nomination for Best Actor for his role as Bob Dylan in the biopic A Complete Unknown; the actor was previously nominated for the same award at the 90th Oscars in 2018 for the movie Call Me By Your Name.
As film journalist and author Mark Harris noted on BlueSky as Oscar nominations were announced, Chalamet appears to be the first man to receive two Best Actor nominations before turning 30 since James Dean, who died at 24 in 1955 and posthumously received nominations for East of Eden and Giant in each of the two Oscars ceremonies after his death.
Chalamet is nominated alongside Colman Domingo (Sing Sing), Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) and Sebastian Stan (The Apprentice) in this year’s Best Actor field. According to Variety, Chalamet’s previous Best Actor nomination at 22 for Call Me By Your Name made him the third-youngest nominee in that category behind Mickey Rooney, who was nominated at 19 for the 1939 movie musical Babes in Arms and Jackie Cooper, who received a Best Actor nomination at just 9 years old for 1931’s Skippy.
Rooney, who died at 93 in 2014, received his second career Oscar nomination at 23 for the 1943 film The Human Comedy, making him the only man to receive two Best Actor nominations in his 20s prior to Dean in the 1950s.

Brody, who returns to the Oscars this year with a nomination for his role in The Brutalist, has been the youngest actor to win the ceremony’s Best Actor award since he won for The Pianist in 2003 at age 29. Chalamet, who turned 29 on Dec. 27, 2024, would take Brody’s place as the youngest Best Actor win ever if he wins the award, considering Brody turned 29 on April 14, 2002, roughly 11 months before the 75th Oscars were held on March 23, 2002.
Emilia Pérez is the top nominee at this year’s ceremony with 13 total nominations; the Netflix musical is the most-nominated non–English language film in Oscars history. Wicked and The Brutalist tied for second place among all films with 10 nominations each.
Conan O’Brien will host the Oscars ceremony, which will air live from the Dolby Theatre at Ovation Hollywood on Sunday, March 2 at 7 p.m. ET on ABC and Hulu.
