Tony Goldwyn Weighs in on the Rumored Ghost Remake — and Whether or Not He’d Join

Time goes by so slowly … but somehow Ghost turns 35 this year.

The hosts of Today brought that up while sitting down with Tony Goldwyn on Jan. 21, to talk all things Scandal, Law & Order and, of course, the otherworldly 1990 film, in which he starred as “the evil Carl,” as Al Roker called him.

Ghost was one of Goldwyn’s first major roles, following a string of appearances on series including St. Elsewhere, Matlock and Designing Women. The wildly popular film famously starred Demi Moore, Patrick Swayze and Whoopi Goldberg, who won an Oscar for her work. It was also nominated for Best Picture and won the award for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen.

In 2023, Channing Tatum told Vanity Fair that his production company Free Association had “the rights” to the film, and he was considering a remake.

“But we’re going to do something different,” the actor said, acknowledging some problematic stereotypes in the original. “I think it needs to change a little bit.”

When asked about the remake on Today, Goldwyn, 64, said, “I heard that!” But that’s where his involvement ends.

“I’ll be in the theater with my tub of popcorn,” he said with a laugh, adding, “the movie still holds up. It’s such a great story and Channing Tatum is an incredibly talented guy, so go for it.”

In 2024, Moore, 62, gave her own thoughts on a potential remake.

“Look, every story in some ways has already been told. The wonderful thing is the different way things can be reinterpreted,” the actress told EW. “I think there are some films that often are better left not touched, and left, and then sometimes there are wonderful surprises in that reinterpretation.”

She added that she hadn’t been contacted about the project, but also gave Tatum her blessing.

“He’s super talented,” she said. “I’d be curious to see what he decides to do.”
