Ty Burrell Reveals the Relationship Rule He and Wife Holly Have Ahead of Their 25th Wedding Anniversary (Exclusive)

Ty and Holly Burrell keep their relationship strong with a similar mindset.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor, 57, reveals the one rule he and his wife — who wed in August 2000 — have to keep their relationship strong.

“This is probably connected to the really old axiom of ‘Don’t go to bed angry,’ but we force ourselves to talk about stuff,” Ty says. “Both of us make sure that if something’s wrong, by the end of the night, we have at least had some discussion about it.”

“Neither one of us are silent treatment people, and I think that’s a real benefit, because I think that can be really hard on a relationship, when you don’t talk about things,” adds the Modern Family alum, who has partnered with Chase and United Airlines to announce new and enhanced travel benefits for United MileagePlus card members.

According to Ty, this ideology has worked for him and Holly, 49, for over two decades, especially given that they are getting ready to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary later this summer.

Still, while he admits that he is “certainly not a relationship expert,” the star says, “I’m just basing this on my own life.”

“But for us, if you don’t talk about it, and it’s sort of simmering in the background, it doesn’t get better,” continues Ty. “Even if it kind of goes away, it’s like it calcifies, I think, in some way, and I think just pushing through, even if it means you’re the one who’s going to need to apologize, it really has made a huge difference.”

“Luckily, it’s kind of been like that for our whole marriage,” adds the father of two.

Ty met Holly in the late 1990s while they were both working at the Shakespeare Theatre in Washington D.C., according to Bustle.

The actor revealed to Redbook that he knew he wanted to marry Holly, who is a professional chef, “on our first date.”

Ty and Holly became first-time parents in 2010, when the couple welcomed their daughter Frances through adoption.

Two years later, they expanded their family with their second daughter, Greta, also via adoption.
