U.S. Open Champion J.J. Spaun and Wife Melody’s ‘Awkward’ Drama Explained

J.J. Spaun’s dramatic win at the 2025 U.S. Open drew just as much chatter from viewers about his life away from the golf course.

Moments after Spaun, 34, drained a 64-foot putt to secure his first major championship on Sunday, June 15, his wife, Melody, and the couple’s two daughters — Emerson, 4, and Violet, 23 months — celebrated with him at Oakmont Country Club, just outside of Pittsburgh. 

However, as J.J. basked in the glow of his win, some golf fans accused him of shunning his wife. 

“Glad it’s not just our living room who all think he and his wife must not be getting along,” one viewer wrote via X. “Man that was awkward.”

Another wrote, “I think JJ Spaun and his wife are in the middle of a fight.”

J.J. kissed his wife near the 18th green after scooping up his oldest daughter in his arms for the walk back to the clubhouse. Melody trailed behind J.J. while carrying their youngest daughter. 

“Very obvious JJ Spaun and his wife are not getting along,” another view shared via X. 

The family all returned to the 18th green for the trophy presentation, though fans noted that J.J. failed to thank Melody during his speech. 

“JJ Spaun didn’t even mention his wife,” one person wrote via X. “Awkward end to a great finish at the US Open.”

During his post-tournament press conference, J.J. explained it had been a wild 24 hours for his family. 

“Well, today I was running to CVS in downtown because my daughter had a stomach bug and was vomiting all night long,” J.J. told reporters. “My wife was up at 3 a.m. and she’s like, ‘Violet’s vomiting all over. She can’t keep anything down.’ So it was kind of a rough start to the morning.”

He continued, “I’m not blaming that on my start, but it was just kind of like it fit the mold of what was going on. The chaos.”

J.J. began the final round one shot behind then-leader Sam Burns. He bogeyed five of his first six holes before recovering for the memorable win on the final hole. 

“My daughter asks me every time Dad goes golfing, she’s like, ‘Were you the winner today?’” J.J. told reporters. “Sometimes I’m like, ‘Yeah, I was.’ And she’s like, ‘Where’s my surprise?’ Today she’s like, ‘You’re the winner today.’ She got to see it. She didn’t have to ask me. That was a really fun moment.”

J.J. and Melody got married in a July 2019 beachside ceremony, which he showed off via Instagram at the time. 

Months before the wedding, J.J. celebrated Melody on Valentine’s Day, calling her his “ laundrywoman, barista, travel agent, #1 supporter, and fiancée.”

J.J. added, “Life would be too hard without you!”
