Wedding Guest Shocked by What Priest Says During Couple’s Wedding Vows

A wedding guest is recounting how they witnessed a ceremony where the priest didn’t quite stick to the script.

In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, the guest shared that they and their wife attended the wedding of a friend’s daughter in an “enormous church.” The ceremony included “a full Catholic mass and service,” and when the priest got to the “marriage section” of the event he began speaking to the couple as he officiated their vows.

“As he’s talking, I hear him say something very odd. I look at my wife and ask if she heard what I heard. She did,” the OP (original poster) recalled. “Nobody else seemed to hear it, and the wedding went off without any other surprises.”

Later, when the guest and their wife were sitting at their table at the reception, they asked their table mates if they had “heard what we did.” The discussion topic immediately had everyone laughing, the OP wrote.

“What did he say?” the OP continued. “While talking through the service with all the solemnity of the occasion, apparently he forgot what he was saying and just said, ‘Blah blah blah.’ ”

The wedding guest said they are “still laughing” over the priest’s surprising break from form.

In the comments section, fellow Reddit users shared their appreciation for the humorous story. One even referenced a memorable Seinfeld episode in which the character George Costanza is dating a woman who repeatedly uses the phrase “yada yada yada’ to gloss over the unimportant details while telling a story.

“Yada-yada-yada, husband and wife. Where’s the reception at?” they joked of the priest’s response.

Another person suggested, “I guess he’s done too many weddings and stopped caring a while back.”

Other commenters chimed in with their own similar wedding stories.

“At my sister’s wedding, the priest started the ceremony by telling the groom that the doors were locked and it was too late to run,” a Redditor wrote.

Someone else shared: “When I got married, my now ex-MIL insisted on getting her favorite priest out of retirement to do the wedding. He forgot more than 1/2 the marriage mass and my name … multiple times.”

Yet another person wrote that they attended a wedding where the priest reenacted a scene from The Princess Bride — and no, it wasn’t previously planned or approved by the couple.

“The bride goes, ‘can we not’, and he stopped and the ceremony proceeded like normal,” they continued. “Seriously the most bizarre thing I’ve ever experienced at a wedding.”
