When Does The Office Spinoff Come Out? Everything to Know About The Paper

NEED TO KNOW

  • The Office spinoff The Paper will follow a newspaper staff in Toledo, Ohio
  • The new series is created by Greg Daniels, who also co-created the original series
  • The Paper premieres on Peacock on Sept. 4, 2025

The first look at The Paper is finally here.

In August 2025, the first trailer for The Office spinoff arrived, giving fans a glimpse at what they can expect from the new series, which is set in a newspaper office in Toledo, Ohio.

The Paper is from Greg Daniels — who adapted the original U.K. version of The Office — and Michael Koman, co-creator of Comedy Central’s Nathan For You.

“It’s about this struggling Midwestern newspaper that’s much reduced from its glory days,” Daniels previously told The Hollywood Reporter. “It’s a fruitful premise.”

He continued, “There’s a tremendous history for local papers. The villain here is the internet and the ability to look at everybody’s news for free, and all the ad revenue going to Google.”

So, how is The Paper connected to the classic NBC sitcom and when does it premiere? Here’s everything to know about the highly anticipated spinoff, including the release date, which Office star is returning to reprise their role and where to watch.

What is The Office spinoff The Paper about?

The same camera crew that documented the employee antics at Dunder Mifflin is now focused on the team at The Truth Teller, a dying local newspaper in Toledo, attempting a revival with the help of volunteer reporters.

The Office fans will instantly recognize a familiar face who made their way to Ohio: Oscar Nuñez, who played the beloved Oscar Martinez on the original NBC series. According to Variety, Oscar won’t be a central character on the series, but he has been part of the script since the beginning.

“I told Mr. Greg Daniels that if Oscar came back, he would probably be living in a more bustling, cosmopolitan city,” Nuñez said at NBCUniversal’s Upfront in May 2025, per Entertainment Weekly.

“Greg heard me and he moved Oscar to Toledo, Ohio — which has three times the population of Scranton. So, it was nice to be heard,” he added.

Nuñez is the only Office alum confirmed so far, but don’t be surprised to see other returning actors.

Former Office stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey — who host the Office Ladies podcast — revealed they stopped by the set of The Paper for a visit.

“[Co-creator] Greg [Daniels] had invited us,” Kinsey said during an appearance on the Today show in April 2025. “We showed up, and not only was Oscar there, but our crew, so many of these wonderful people — cause the crew was our extended family, and we’re still really close with them.”

“And that was really moving to see,” she added.

Who is in the cast of The Office spinoff The Paper?

In addition to Nuñez, The Paper will star Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore.

Other members of The Paper newsroom include Melvin Gregg, Chelsea Frei, Ramona Young, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman and Tim Key.

During a June 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Steve Carell revealed that before Gleeson accepted the role, he reached out to him for advice.

“He’s an excellent actor. And he actually called me and asked, ‘Should I do this? … Did you enjoy it?’ I said, ‘Of course,’ ” Carell recalled.

That same May, the Four Seasons actor told The Hollywood Reporter that he was “excited” about the spinoff and had no plans to return as Michael Scott.

“I will be watching but I will not be showing up. It’s just a new thing and there’s really no reason for my character to show up in something like that,” Carell said.

When will The Office spinoff The Paper premiere?

The Paper will be released on Sept. 4, 2025, over a decade after The Office ended its nine-season run in May 2013.

“It’s been more than ten years since the final episode of The Office aired on NBC, and the acclaimed comedy series continues to gain popularity and build new generations of fans on Peacock,” Lisa Katz, the President of NBCUniversal Entertainment, said in a statement when the spinoff was announced.

“This new series set in the universe of Dunder Mifflin introduces a new cast of characters in a fresh setting ripe for comedic storytelling: a daily newspaper,” she continued.

The first four episodes will drop on Sept. 4, with two more coming to Peacock each week on Thursdays until Sept. 25, per Variety.

Is there a trailer for The Office spinoff The Paper?

The first trailer for The Paper was released on Aug. 7, less than one month before the show is set to premiere on Peacock.

“Several years ago, a documentary crew filmed the story of Dunder Mifflin. Now they’ve found a new subject,” reads text show on the screen at the beginning of the trailer.

Then, fans are introduced to the staff of the Toledo Truth Teller as the newspaper is fighting to earn back the status it once held with the help of new volunteer reporters.

The trailer ends with the first footage of Nuñez back in character as Oscar, looking alarmed to see the cameras at his workplace. “Not again, I’m not agreeing to any of this,” he says angrily as he gets up from his desk.

Where can I watch The Paper?

The Paper will be available to stream on Peacock, joining both the U.K. and the U.S. versions of The Office, which are already on the platform.
