Max Fried has had the support of his girlfriend and fellow athlete, Reni Meyer-Whalley, throughout his career.
The New York Yankees pitcher, who signed a historic eight-year $218 million contract with the team in 2024, confirmed his relationship with Meyer-Whalley that same year.
Although the MLB athlete keeps much of his personal life private, he has occasionally brought his girlfriend to milestone events — including the several MLB All-Star Games and his December 2024 Yankees introductory press conference.
Fried, who is the starting pitcher for the Yankees on Opening Day on March 25, isn't the only athlete in the relationship. Meyer-Whalley played volleyball at the University of Southern California before graduating in 2018. She has gone on to work a variety of marketing and branding jobs.

Meyer-Whalley was born and raised in Los Angeles, and has eight siblings — including an older sister who also played volleyball in college, according to her USC roster. She attended Marymount High School in L.A. where she played the sport and was named her team's MVP when she helped lead them to the California state title in 2012.
After graduating high school, she committed to the University of Washington as a libero in 2014 but transferred to USC the following year and didn't play volleyball her sophomore year. However, after initially thinking that she was going to quit playing, Meyer-Whalley changed her mind and joined the USC team as a libero and defensive specialist her junior year.
"My volleyball journey has been interesting to say the least," Meyer-Whalley said in a farewell speech during the USC Women's Volleyball Brunch in January 2019. "It's been really long. I've been playing since I was 8, and I also never thought that I'd make it here."
She added that her decision to pick the sport back up was "probably one of the best decisions of my life."
Over the course of her junior and two senior seasons, Meyer-Whalley played in nearly every game and started in many of them, as well. As a senior, Meyer-Whalley finished with 854 assists and was ranked ninth in the Pac-12.

Meyer-Whalley graduated from USC with a bachelor's degree in communication and media studies in December 2018, per her LinkedIn. After graduating, she worked as an assistant volleyball coach for her former club team, the Sunshine Volleyball Club.
In 2020, she pivoted her career and started working as a marketing and branding specialist for Sweet Flower and later became a marketing coordinator with Uni Refill System. Since 2022, she has served as a freelance executive assistant for the House of Stephanie couture jewelry line.

Although both Fried and Meyer-Whalley grew up in neighborhoods around L.A., it's not clear when or how they met. Both athletes have kept their relationship off social media, and Fried has not publicly spoken about his girlfriend.
However, they confirmed their relationship in July 2024 when they walked the red carpet together during All-Star Game weekend in Arlington, Texas. The couple were photographed holding hands and laughing while posing for photos behind-the-scenes at the event's portrait studio.

Although Fried keeps his relationship private, he's had Meyer-Whalley by his side for major career milestones — including his historic Yankees introductory press conference.
“When the Yankees say they’re interested in you, you perk up and you listen,” Fried said at the time. “There’s a standard and it’s an extremely storied franchise. I was excited to hop on a call and be able to talk with the group up here."
Fried signed with the Yankees after playing with the Atlanta Braves for seven years. Prior to his time with the Braves, he was drafted to the San Diego Padres out of high school in 2012.
For the memorable signing day, Meyer-Whalley and Fried's parents all attended and proudly smiled with him for photos after the press conference, per photos obtained by the New York Post.
Meyer-Whalley also joined Fried for the 2025 All-Star Game red carpet on July 15, 2025, in Atlanta. Once again, they smiled and held hands while posing on the carpet and in the portrait studio.
