Dove Cameron is happy to give fans a glimpse into her relationship with Damiano David.
The Emmy-winning actress and musician, whose new single “Too Much” is out now, confirmed her relationship with the Måneskin member in February 2024 after a couple months of dating rumors, marking Cameron’s first time sharing details of her romantic life with the public since 2021.
“We had a conversation early on, because it’s a weird thing that you have to talk about,” she tells PEOPLE of the decision. “He was like, ‘If someone in high school, or who’s a lawyer, nurse or working at a coffee shop can post a picture of their partner and share the normal, beautiful parts of their lives, why should it be different for us?'”
Cameron, 29, long felt “so much anxiety” around opening her relationships up to public scrutiny. “I’ve been public in the past,” she says, “and I’ve had some not-so-public relationships that I was a little bit less inclined to share. Not because of the people I was seeing, but because it just felt like a scary thing to be really open about. It’s like I got scared.”
Ultimately, she agreed with David, 26. “I had done so much growing on my own, just in terms of being okay with who I was at this point in my life and feeling more like I could come back in the public eye,” explains Cameron, who took a step back from her career in late 2023. “It was something I had to do a lot of work on, long before I met my partner.”
Around when the former child star felt ready to work again, her relationship with David “got out of our hands,” and fans began to find out they were together. “So it was like, ‘Why not be a little more normal about this? It’s a beautiful thing,'” she recalls. “It’s so beautiful to be in love.”
“We keep so much of our relationship to ourselves, of course,” adds Cameron. “I don’t know. It just feels normal. I don’t really think about it, if I’m honest.”
When it comes to keeping her relationship with David strong, she insists there’s no particular “secret” or “rule” they abide by.
“I think we’re just extremely lucky. We’ve somehow navigated being apart for long stretches of time… We just really make it work,” says Cameron. “We are best friends, we are constantly connected. You want to be together all the time, so you just figure out a way to make that happen.”
