Sheryl Crow is sharing why the timing just wasn’t right for her to join The Voice when the show first launched.
While stepping out to the third A Country Thing Happened on the Way to Cure Parkinson’s event in Nashville on Wednesday, April 16, the singer revealed that she was asked to serve as a coach on the reality competition series’ first season. But she said she had to pass on the opportunity due to her family circumstances at the time.
“I had a newborn and did not want to move back to L.A.,” she recalls, before quickly noting, “Actually, that’s not true. He [son Levi] was about 2 years old and I didn’t want to move back to L.A. and so I didn’t do it. And I have not really entertained it since then because we have a busy life here and normalcy is really lovely.”
However, as it turns out, Crow is now taking part in the show in a different way. On Monday, April 14, the NBC show announced that the “Soak Up the Sun” singer and LeAnn Rimes would be joining as this season’s mega mentors.
She tells PEOPLE the experience has been a fulfilling one. “I loved mentoring. It was a blast, and I absolutely adore [The Voice coach] Kelsea [Ballerini],” she says.

Crow’s son Levi is now 14 years old. The music star is also mom to son Wyatt, 18. In November 2023, the boys made a rare public appearance to celebrate Crow’s induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The family of three posed together on the red carpet ahead of the ceremony at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
The nine-time Grammy winner previously opened up to PEOPLE about how her kids’ musical aspirations — and whether they might follow in her footsteps.
“I don’t know that either one of them really wants to do that, but they’re both musical, and I’m one of those obnoxious parents who’s like, ‘You have to take piano. Do not argue with me about it,’ ” Crow said at the time.
“But my 15-year-old, he’s got a great ear and can play really well,” she continued. “I think he will always tinker, but he wants to be a marine biologist, so I don’t know how to compete with that — I don’t even know what they do. So I’m happy for him to go save the reefs. That’s what he wants to do.”
She told PEOPLE she’d been introducing them to some of the classics she listened to while growing up — including her favorite Motown hits.

“They’re just like, ‘Mom, what is this old music?’ But they go around humming it and singing it,” she shared. “My 15-year-old is always like, ‘I got sunshine…’ So, I feel like I’m doing the right thing. I grew up with it and my 15-year-old is a great bass player, and he’s learning James Jamerson just like I did.”
