Sometimes, Boy Meets World did not hit the mark, according to its stars.

On the April 10 episode of their rewatch podcast Pod Meets World, Will Friedle, Danielle Fishel and Rider Strong broke down season 6, episode 8, titled “You’re Married, You’re Dead,” and explained why they think it’s one of the series’ worst.

In the episode, Cory (Ben Savage) goes to a Hooters-inspired bikini bar called Cleaváge with Shawn (Strong), Eric (Friedle) and Jack (Matthew Lawrence) to prove that he’s fun despite being engaged. Topanga (Fishel), meanwhile, has strong feelings about the women who work there.

“I have a feeling Will’s gonna hate this episode,” Strong, 45 said at the start of the podcast. “It plays on the man-woman trip thing that we’ve talked about a lot on the show that you really can’t stand.” Strong said that for his part, the jokes felt “rushed,” the plot felt “forced” and everyone besides Savage felt “off.”

“Yeah, this ranks up there with arguably the worst episode for me of the series,” Friedle, 48, said, pointing out the many storylines he thought were confusing or “stupid.” “This entire episode I thought was idiotic,” he said. “I know there’s people [who say], ‘Oh they’re so harsh on the show.’ I know TV. This was not it. This was a bad episode of television all the way around.”

Fishel, 43, agreed. “It feels like all of us were not in it, and I think it’s because, at the time, we probably felt it was bad.” She said she could see “when my soul left my body. I can see I am vacant. I can’t stand it.”

She was also “furious” that the writers had Topanga say, “As long as there’s women willing to to dance like that, there will be men to see them” — she was upset to hear Topanga have a conversation in which she was “shaming women.” Later in the podcast episode, she called it “my least favorite scene of any scene I’ve ever seen, ever in the history of the show.”

“This was just a bad episode,” Friedle said. “This is by far the worst episode of season 6,” he said, then added, “so far.”

One of their least favorite parts of the episode was “the tushy dance,” when the waitresses dance with the people at the bar. When Fishel mentioned it, Friedle said, “Don’t, don’t. That never happened. I’m bleeping that from my memory. That never occurred.”

Fishel said she’d like to delete the whole episode and said she had “zero memory” of it before they rewatched it. “I remember none of this,” Friedle agreed.

Strong also said that he didn’t like how the episode acted like Shawn was spiraling because he broke up with Angela (Trina McGee). “I might as well be doing heroin right now,” he said, calling the show’s emphasis on long-term romantic relationships over everything “just so blatant.”

Fishel said she felt the episode constantly threw Topanga “under the bus” by making her both rude to the waitresses and manipulative toward Cory.

“This is probably the most ideologically twisted episode of Boy Meets World,” Strong said. “It’s twisting itself around all these different concepts that don’t work against each other or with each other, and it’s like trying to do it all. And it’s just is confusing mess.”

“I don’t know how anybody could watch this episode and think and defend it in any way, shape, or form,” Friedle added.
