A woman wants to skip her father-in-law’s wedding after he bailed on her daughter’s first birthday.
In a post on Reddit’s popular “Am I the A——” forum, the woman asked users on the platform if she is in the wrong for planning to skip her father-in-law’s nuptials.
The woman explained that she keeps her father-in-law “at arm’s length” because he’s always had a “strained relationship” with her husband, adding that he has a “forgive but don’t forget attitude.”
Even though the woman has made attempts to repair the bond, her husband’s father has let them down time and time again.
Last year, the couple welcomed a daughter who is the first grandchild on both sides of their families. The Redditor invited her father-in-law to her daughter’s first birthday party, but he and his fiancée declined so that they could go to a baseball game.
“They go to games twice a month during the entirety of the season, so it made my husband and I mad that they would prioritize a baseball game over her first birthday,” the woman wrote.
Although the woman was originally planning on attending her father-in-law’s upcoming wedding, she’s now considering taking a page out of his playbook by skipping his major life celebration for another event of lesser importance.
A few days ago, she discovered that there’s going to be a chicken fashion show with “food trucks,” “vendors” and “chicken couture” near where her best friend lives. She instantly wanted to go.
“I don’t get out of the house very often due to being a stay-at-home mom, so when I found out my husband could watch the baby all day I was ecstatic,” she said.
She soon realized the fashion show was the same date as the wedding, but ultimately didn’t care.
“I still plan on going to the chicken fashion show and skipping out on the wedding, AITA (Am I the A——)?” she asked.
Many Reddit users in the comments section argued that they needed more information in order to fairly judge the situation.
“How does your husband feel about you missing it? It’s his feelings you should be concerned with,” one person asked, with another writing, “If he doesn’t care NTA (Not The A——). If he does, YTA (Your The A——) for not supporting him.”

After reading these questions, the OP (original poster) let fellow Redditors know her husband’s feelings in a comment underneath her post.
“A lot of people are asking for context on how my husband feels about this situation,” she said. “I asked him and he said, ‘I would rather you go to the chicken fashion show so I can stay home with a baby and have an excuse not to go to my dad’s wedding. He’s going to prioritize a baseball game over our daughter, you can prioritize hanging out with your bestie over him.’ ”
