Woman Feels Betrayed After Best Friend Copies Her Concert Outfit, Wears It to the Show First

NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman says she spent weeks putting together the perfect concert outfit
  • Her best friend wore an almost identical look to the concert before she could
  • She turned to Reddit to ask if she was wrong for being upset about it

A woman has turned to Reddit for advice following a disagreement with her best friend over an outfit choice for a concert. She shared that the two of them were attending the same show, but on different days, and that her friend’s decision to wear an almost identical outfit has left her feeling hurt.

“My friend (let’s call her M) and I are both going to a concert, but on separate days, as we bought tickets at different times and plan to go with different people,” she wrote, explaining that she and M are close and consider each other best friends after knowing each other for years.

The woman said she spent a great deal of time planning her look. “I recently came up with an outfit after ALOT of deliberation, and was quite proud of how it looked in the end,” she shared, adding that two of her friends reacted positively when she showed them what she intended to wear.

The trouble begins when M told her that she was struggling to come up with her own outfit. “Later, M tells me that since she couldn’t come up with an outfit she liked and the date of the concert was getting closer, she took some inspiration from what I was wearing,” she wrote.

At the time, the woman doesn’t mind and even says she felt “a little honoured” by it.

However, things changed when the first concert date arrived. “Fast forward to the day M is attending the concert,” she shared. “I received a notification from the group chat and saw a picture of her in an almost replica of my outfit.”

She then described how closely the outfits resemble one another, saying there was only “one colour change to an item, but otherwise an EXACT REPLICATION.” She noted that M never acknowledged just how similar the two looks were, only claiming she was inspired by it.

Now, the woman is left feeling like her outfit has been taken from her. “She will undoubtedly post photos of her outfit before me, and since we run in the same circles and know all the same people, everyone will think that I copied her instead of the other way around,” she wrote, noting that the situation feels especially frustrating because of the time and energy she spent curating her own look.

Still, she hasn’t spoken up about her feelings. “I didn’t say anything to her, and I still have not, since I don’t want to be rude and don’t know if I’m overreacting,” the woman admitted. Even as she acknowledged that M looked “lovely in the outfit,” she can’t help but feel disappointed.

Her frustration, she said, comes from how much thought she put into her choice. “The fact that I planned so far ahead, only for her to wear what I planned BEFORE ME, is so annoying,” she explained, emphasizing that M knows how seriously she took her outfit, which makes the situation sting even more.

On Reddit, she asked the community plainly: “Am I the a——?” The responses quickly reassured her that she is not in the wrong for being upset.

One commenter wrote, “NTA. It’s one thing to get inspired by an outfit but it’s a completely different thing to copy it exactly especially for the same event.”

They then pointed out that her feelings are valid, adding, “It’s frustrating when you put a lot of thought and effort into something only for someone to take it and run with it and it sounds like that’s what happened here.”

The woman replied to the support with relief, admitting she has been doubting herself. “Thank you, I’ve been going crazy thinking I’m a bad friend for being bothered by it,” she shared with the commenter.

She also revealed her suspicion that her friend knew what she was doing, writing, “But the fact that she didn’t ask, and didn’t show the outfit before she wore it kinda makes me feel like she knew what she was doing…”
