Weddings can spark new romances, no matter the age or circumstance.
In a Reddit post, one woman shared that she and her husband have been married for over five years. She explained that her mother died when she was 16 and her husband was “raised by a single mom,” so they each “only had one parent at the wedding.”
She noted that her father and her husband’s mother “met during the wedding planning, and quickly discovered how much they had in common and how well they got along.”
However, it wasn’t until the wedding day that their dynamic shifted a bit.
“After a few too many glasses of wine, they danced together at the wedding reception,” the woman wrote.
Although the couple “noticed a little bit of flirtation between them,” they “didn’t think much of it until they started seeing each other regularly after the wedding, going out together for drinks, going on walks together, going fishing together.”
“Even though it was a little weird for us that our parents were ambiguously and later officially dating each other, we truly didn’t care because they just seemed so happy,” the woman shared.
Despite the couple’s acceptance of the unique situation, they never could have prepared for the moment their respective parents had a wedding of their own.
“Yesterday, my husband walked his mom down the aisle to meet my dad at the altar,” she wrote. “My husband’s mom and my dad said their vows, and became husband and wife. And my husband and I became… stepsiblings.”
While the couple seems to be happy for their parents, Redditors had a hard time wrapping their head around the new dynamic.
“This is either gonna simplify or extremely complicate estate planning for your folks,” one person commented.
“Family tree becomes an oval,” another person joked.
“Your kids, if you have them, will be cousins to themselves! Honestly… it is very sweet,” a third person added. The woman replied to that comment, saying, “It is gonna be a confusing situation to explain to our future kids.”
In response to another comment, the original poster replied, “My husband has been jokingly calling me step-sis since the wedding.”
