  • While the home gardener is quite sad about the incident involving a neighbor’s kid, readers tried to find a silver lining
  • One reader replied, “Not saying it’s right to steal but thinking that they may have been picked for a good reason, might take the sting out a little“

An old saying goes, “One daffodil is worth a thousand pleasures,” but for one woman, all of her stolen daffodils are making her “really sad.”

The home gardener turned to U.K.-based forum Mumsnet to express her dismay after discovering a neighbor’s kid had picked all of the daffodils from her house’s front yard without permission.

“I had lots of notifications of movement on the doorbell camera and lo and behold a kid (8ish years old) from a few houses down with a bunch of daffodils in her hand,” the woman recalled. “Checked mine in my front garden when I got home and Every. Single. One. has been taken.”

“I’m just really sad tbh,” she added. “I know there are much bigger problems in the world but they were a little spark of joy for me 😕.”

After an outpouring of support from Mumsnet users who validated her feelings and told her it was okay to feel sadness and other emotions after this flower-stealing incident, the woman replied to one of them.

“Thanks, all. I don’t feel so silly about feeling so sad about it now,” she responded. “I am also slightly annoyed about it because they literally have their own daffodils in their front garden but they’ve been unharmed!”

One commenter offered a potential silver lining to the stolen daffodils.

“That little spark of joy they bring you?” the Mumsnet user wrote to the home gardener. “They clearly also spark that in others 🥰. Maybe that little girl picked them for her mam for mothers day! Super sweet.”

Another person wrote, “Not saying it’s right to steal but thinking that they may have been picked for a good reason, might take the sting out a little.”

However, others weren’t as optimistic with their responses.

“I can’t believe that people are making excuses for this and saying it’s ‘sweet’ that the little girl did it for her mum,” a reader commented. “If my children had done it I’d have been really cross with them and taken them back to the house to apologize.”

The home gardener gave a flowery update in the comments section.

“Eek! The only thing making me feel slightly better is that I can see my tulips coming but feel like I need to be very protective of them now.”
