Woman Is Shocked After a Colleague Requested Gas Money After Giving Her a Ride to a Work Event

A woman has been left annoyed after her colleague asked her to cover fuel costs for giving her a lift to a work event.

The woman explained on the community forum Mumsnet that her co-worker requested more gas money than she had anticipated for a one-way trip, after making her own way home on the train afterward.

“I decided to leave early, and paid for a £90 (about $121) train fare home. When she drove us to the work event, it ended up being a 6-hour trip,” she wrote. “When we arrived, I offered her £40 (about $54), which I thought would be more than enough for my share. She rejected and said I just fill up on the way back. That’s fine I thought.”

The woman said that she later received a text from her colleague, asking “very bluntly” for her to pay £51.25 (about $69).

“I told her surely it would be half of that, as I only traveled with her one way up,” the woman said. “Her logic is that because we agreed I would fill up on the way back, I should pay up, even though she didn’t take me home.”

The woman said that she is “more than happy” to pay her colleague the amount she initially offered as she believes “that covered well over half of our journey,” before asking readers if she should pay the rest of the amount.

One person replied, “You should only pay for your share.”

Another reader commented, “She used the same amount of fuel whether you were a passenger both ways, so you should pay the same as you’d initially agreed. If you hadn’t agreed to ‘car share,’ she may well have found someone else to share costs with or chosen to use public transport instead.”

Someone else suggested that the woman and her colleague claim the travel fees back from their employer: “Why are you paying for travel to a work event? Claim it back and tell her to do the same.”

Another reader said that the woman should just pay the money that her colleague asked for.

“You offered her £40, she declined with a counteroffer of filling up on the way back, which you accepted. Pay the £51.25. Unless you want to make some kind of stance over £11.25 and risk falling out with a co-worker over it,” the user wrote.
