A woman confronted her best friend about a scandalous rumor and was caught off guard when the friend told her the gossip was all real.
She explained on the community forum Mumsnet that this married friend, whom she became friends with 16 years ago when they both became moms, was keeping a secret from her for longer than they’ve been acquainted.
“I thought I knew everything about her,” she wrote. “I’ve been out occasionally with my friend over the years, she attracts the attention of men but [there’s] nothing unusual in that.”
However, “through a mutual friend I heard what I thought/hoped was an unthinkable rumour that she’d been unfaithful with someone it turns out we both know,” she continued.
The woman then told her friend about the rumors and was shocked to learn the truth. “She told it was true and the details even more gruesome than rumoured,” the woman said.
“She then went on to reveal that before they had kids she’d been cheating behind his back for years,” the original poster continued.
Feeling “deceived” and “totally shocked,” the woman admitted that she’s struggling to look at her longtime friend the same way.
She then described her friend’s husband as a “good Dad and very attentive and romantic to his [other half],” making the cheating revelation sting a bit more.
“There is one occasion that I can’t get out of my head a few years ago when I left her walking back from a night out with a guy,” the woman then recalled.
“A few weeks later her [other half] made passing reference about her coming home the following morning, assuming she’d stayed at mine,” she continued, noting that “I haven’t asked her about it, I almost don’t want to know.”
Wondering if it would be unreasonable to “ditch her as a friend,” the woman sought outside opinions from other Mumsnet users.
“If she can do this to the father of her kids who she lives with, then what’s she capable of toward her friends!?” one reader commented.
Others cautioned her of ending the friendship over the cheating. “I wouldn’t. It’s nobody’s business but hers and her bloke’s,” another person replied. “He’s the one she’s broken promises to.”
