A woman is keen to find out whether other people who like to cook also prefer not eating out at restaurants
“As my own cooking improves, eating out is less satisfying,” she explained in a post on Mumsnet as her reason for not enjoying restaurants as much
Many fellow Mumsnet users agreed and validated the woman’s feelings
After tasting improvements in her home-cooked meals, one woman is wondering if it’s still worth it to eat out at restaurants.
The woman explained on the U.K.-based community forum Mumsnet why she now prefers eating at home — and is keen to know if others feel the same.
“I’m a fairly decent cook and do make an effort to make something nice from scratch most days and will experiment with new recipes and techniques,” she wrote. “I am not masterchef level or professional, but I obviously cook to my own taste and I mostly really enjoy what I make.”
“I do like eating out as well, but as my own cooking improves, eating out is less satisfying and I often find the food bland or too salty, one thing is over cooked, another under, or it is just generally underwhelming,” the woman added.
The Mumsnet user then listed some recent unfavorable restaurant outings.
“We ate out at an Italian place well regarded locally, and it was just meh; the pasta with roast veg and tomato sauce I make at home is much nicer. The focaccia I make is better,” she said.
“There is a very cool Korean place in my town, run by Brits not Koreans, and everyone raves about it, but the food was just so so,” she continued. “The Korean food I make at home is better. There is an actual Korean place in town run by Koreans and the food there is amazing.”

Wanting to know if this is a shared feeling among people who like to cook, the woman asked, “Does good food at home spoil some of the pleasure of eating out or am I being unreasonable?”
In a poll under her post, 80% of the more than 300 voters selected the “You are NOT being unreasonable” voting option.
“I totally agree,” one reader replied. “As eating out is so much more expensive than it used to be, my standards and expectations are higher.”
Meanwhile, another user offered another perspective, commenting, “Eating out is a luxury — particularly these days — so I never choose stuff off the menu which I think I could do reasonably at home.”
