A woman says she’s “very annoyed” that her husband’s niece didn’t acknowledge the couple’s “very generous” wedding gift.
In a post on Reddit’s “Wedding Shaming” forum, the woman explained that she and her husband went to his niece’s out-of-town wedding last month. Despite her husband recently getting laid off, the couple paid “a lot of money” for their hotel and then gave what they thought was “a generous amount of money” as a gift for the bride’s honeymoon fund.
“[It was] more than we’ve ever given anyone for a wedding before,” the OP (original poster) noted, adding, “I told my husband he should write a check for safety, but he wanted to give cash since he didn’t know if she was keeping her last name, etc.”
After the wedding, the bride sent “a timely thank-you note” — but she didn’t mention anything about the gift, prompting the couple to wonder if she even received the money in the first place.
“We worried it was lost or stolen, even though we put it in the card box at the reception,” the OP wrote.
She said her husband suggested that “maybe this was ‘just something young kids do nowadays,’ which is feasible as many have no understanding of etiquette.” But when he texted his sister, the bride’s mother, she confirmed that his niece had indeed received the money.
“I am just floored that she didn’t mention the gift, and now actually very annoyed,” the OP reiterated. “A simple ‘thank you for the gift of money we used toward our honeymoon. We had such a great time!’ would have been sufficient.”
Weeks later, the OP still can’t get past the apparent slight — and she said it’s changed her opinion of the bride.
“My opinion of her has gone downhill, when I really liked her before,” she wrote, revealing, “I had even been considering leaving her part of my estate since we don’t have kids, but that idea is over now.”
The OP griped: “She probably wouldn’t ever acknowledge that gift either.”
Reacting to her post in the comments section, fellow Redditors had a much different take on the situation. Many pointed out that the niece did take the time to write a thank-you note.
“She sent you a thank you note, but you’re mad it wasn’t thanky enough?” one person questioned, adding, “Someone here is tacky, but it isn’t your niece.”
Another said: “She sent you a thank you card. What did you think she was thanking you for if not for your gift?”
Someone else noted that it can be awkward acknowledging cash gifts.
“People sometimes don’t know how to word a thank-you for money. It seems crass to name the amount, etc.,” they commented.

Quite a few people urged the OP to let it go and move on.
“Worrying about this is only going to bring drama and unnecessary stress,” one person said. “It’s not worth any more of your time, and you can still have a special relationship with her, as in the grand scheme of things this isn’t worth staying upset about.”
