Woman Who’s Not a ‘Dog Person’ Says She’s Having Second Thoughts About Upcoming Job Interview at Pet-Friendly Company

NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman who is “not a dog person” says she is having second thoughts about an upcoming job interview
  • She says that the company she is interviewing with prides itself in its dog-friendly culture — but this “isn’t a plus” for her
  • The woman shared her predicament on a popular community site, where commenters weighed in on how she should proceed

A woman says she’s having second thoughts about an upcoming job interview due to the office’s pet policy.

The woman detailed her story on the “Am I Being Unreasonable?” forum on the U.K.-based community site Mumsnet.com, where women can go to seek advice on a variety of topics. In her post, the woman shared that she is “not a dog person.”

“I don’t really like them, but can bear them for a short amount of time,” she explained.

The original poster (OP) went on to say that she has been asked to interview for a job with a dog-friendly office culture.

“This isn’t a plus for me,” she continued, adding, “I imagine dogs in the office are overly intrusive, and I think it changes the dynamic.”

The woman concluded her post by asking other Mumsnet users if they had experience in “offices where dogs are allowed” and “how it is day to day, especially if you aren’t a big dog fan.”

The majority of commenters told the OP that the job opportunity might not realistically be the best fit for her.

“I’d assume this wasn’t the job for me,” one person said. “Unless it’s [a service] dog (which we do have in my office), I just don’t want to spend my day around dogs. I find them annoying and smelly — and I’m sure some aren’t, and someone might come on this thread to tell me how lovely, well-behaved and non-smelly their dog is. But I still don’t want to work with them.”

Another person added, “I am not a dog person either and wouldn’t like this — definitely not a plus point. As long as the owners keep their dogs to themselves and don’t allow them to wander, and don’t get offended when I choose not to engage with their animal, [it’s] possibly bearable.”

Someone else suggested that the OP go to the interview as planned, but “be honest” about her concerns.

“Just be honest at the interview. They are not going to change their workplace for you, so you have to inquire so you can see if the presence of dogs is something you could live with (manager’s dog sleeps in a basket under his desk all day) or not (dogs wandering around). It would save everyone a lot of time,” the person said.
