Woman’s Dream of Living with Her Older Sister Turns Into a Nightmare After She Freeloads Incessantly

A 25-year-old woman is turning to Reddit after a living arrangement with her sister turned sour — and the poster was left with a drained savings account.

The woman explains that she and her 29-year-old sister decided to move in together about a year ago. “I thought it would be a great idea because we always got along growing up, and honestly, I was looking forward to spending more time with her as adults,” she writes.

They agreed to split expenses evenly, however, things quickly went south. “She eats everything. I’d buy groceries, stock the fridge with stuff for both of us, and within days, it’d all be gone,” the woman explains. “Snacks? She finishes them in one sitting. Toiletries? She uses mine and never buys more.”

Despite attempts to address the issue, the older sister consistently brushed off her concerns. According to the poster, she would say, “Oh I’ll get it next time,” or “You’re so good at shopping, I’ll just pay you back later.”

But, the situation reached a breaking point when the younger sister realized her savings had been depleted from all the spendin. She confronted her sister and gave her an ultimatum: either she starts contributing or stops sharing household items entirely.

“She completely flipped out,” she shares. “She said I was being ‘selfish’ and ‘controlling’ and accused me of putting money over family. She even said I was making her feel unwelcome in her own home which, by the way, is a place I’m mostly paying for.”

Since their heated argument, the sisters are barely on speaking terms. The younger sister feels torn because she wants to protect her finances but also wants to preserve her relationship with her older sister. “I feel bad because I don’t want to ruin our relationship, but I also can’t keep letting her walk all over me,” she says.

Many Redditors have sided with the poster, claiming the other sister should start contributing ASAP. “She’s clearly taking advantage of you, it’s completely fair to set boundaries. If she doesn’t start pulling her weight, it’s time to stop covering for her,” one user writes.

Another comments, “Sounds like the two of you aren’t compatible as roommates. You should start to consider what your other options are.” The poster responds, “Yeah, looks like it!”
