Woman’s Sister Says She ‘Excluded’ Her Boyfriend of 4 Months by Not Inviting Him to Intimate Birthday Dinner

NEED TO KNOW

  • A woman turned to Reddit to inquire if she was wrong for not inviting her sister’s boyfriend to her intimate birthday dinner
  • Her sister has been dating her boyfriend for about four months
  • She ultimately went to the birthday dinner solo but was “quiet the whole time”

A birthday should be a special day for the person who is turning another year older. For one woman that wasn’t her experience due to her sister and her boyfriend.

According to the birthday girl, who shared her story on Reddit’s popular r/AmItheAsshole forum on Thursday, Aug. 14, the drama erupted after she decided not to invite her sister’s boyfriend to her intimate birthday dinner last weekend.

The 27-year-old said she had planned for the get-together to be something for just “close friends and immediate family” — a total of 8 people, as the restaurant had a limit for the guests allowed at her preferred time slot.

“I prioritized my parents, my brother and his wife, and my best friends who I’ve known for over a decade,” the Reddit user said.

She added her 25-year-old sister Lily to the guest list, but thought she could come solo as she’s only been dating her boyfriend Mark for about four months now.

“He’s fine, but we’re not close and he can be a bit… hmmmm… intense in group settings,” the Reddit user explained, noting that she has also only met Mark twice.

The birthday girl explained the table limit to her sister and expressed that she wanted the event to be for close family and friends, but her sister “seemed upset and asked why Mark wasn’t invited.”

“She said he’s ‘basically family now’ and that it was rude to exclude him,” the birthday girl said.

While her sister ended up coming to the birthday dinner, the Reddit user said she was “quiet the whole time” and barely talked to her.

“My mom hinted I ‘should’ve just made room’ to avoid drama. I feel bad she’s hurt, but it was my birthday and I wanted it small,” said the birthday girl, who is wondering if she was in the wrong the whole time.

The Reddit user got her answer in the comment section, where various people agreed that she’s “not the a—— ” (NTA).

“NTA. It’s not like you’re having a huge party where capacity isn’t an issue,” one person wrote. “A boyfriend of a few months is not ‘part of the family’ and if she can’t spend a few hours away from him to celebrate her sister at a small gathering, that’s just pathetic.”

“How were you supposed to ‘just make room’ when the restaurant had an eight person limit?, ” another comment read. “Your sister dating someone for all of a hot second doesn’t make him family or obligate you or anyone else to automatically include him in everything. She needs to grow up. NTA.”
