Zoe Saldaña is praising Lioness creator Taylor Sheridan for his work on the third season of the hit Paramount+ show.

The Oscar winner, 48, teased to PEOPLE the challenges her Lioness character Joe McNamara will face in the upcoming season and Sheridan’ role in creating such a captivating storyline for her.

“I think that [Joe] is a woman that was conditioned very early on in her life to take on a great deal of responsibility, and as long as she convinces herself with the woman that she stares at in the mirror, that she can do it all, she’s gonna be okay,” Saldaña says at the New York City red carpet for Lioness season 3 on July 29.

“What Taylor does so beautiful is showing us, by challenging Joe with unexpected events in her personal life but also in her work life, that maybe she can’t [do it all]. And it makes you question whether or not that’s bad, if you can’t do it all,” she adds.

The Guardians of the Galaxy star says the complexity of the characters, and the way Sheridan explores the balance between family life and a life of service, is one of the things that keeps her coming back for more.

“It’s a show that I love because it really sheds light on the sacrifices that people who live to serve their country have to go through in order for them to keep us safe,” she says.

According to a logline for season 3, “hidden networks, foreign operatives and personal betrayals collide as Joe walks the line between duty and home as unseen forces circle her world.”

“Patterns appear where they shouldn’t, names vanish and paths rearrange. Guided by Kaitlyn (Nicole Kidman) and Westfield (Michael Kelly), Joe confronts enemies operating in the shadows, leaving her to reckon with a war that now reaches into every part of her life,” the logline continues.

A preview of the series revealed that Joe will be sharing more with her family about her job and the dangers that come with it as she continues her fight to defend the country. “This isn’t the end of a fight. It’s the start of one. Are you up for it?” Kaitlyn says in the trailer to Joe, who replies, “I’m up for it.”

Saldaña tells PEOPLE the challenges she faces as a “working mom” are incredibly different from the ones her character Joe faces, but there are “similarities.”

“The only thing is that mine are much more diluted. I am going through, you know, a time when my kids are getting older and they’re really being vocal about how they wanna live and where they wanna live. And the life of an artist means it’s a nomadic life,” the mom of three said.

“You’re here today, you’re somewhere else tomorrow. And it’s not necessarily for every family…,” she continued. “I’m only dealing with, like, one decimal of what Joe has to deal with. I think that she handles it with so much grace.”

Morgan Freeman, James Jordan, LaMonica Garrett, Austen Hébert, Laysla De Oliveira, Genesis Rodriguez and Jill Wagner also star in the series. Ian Bohen joins the show as a series regular.
