Two people have died and four others have been left injured following a fiery single car collision in Texas.

In a press release shared on Facebook, the Conroe Police Department confirmed that the incident took place in the 2300 block of White Oak Blvd at Park Blvd in Conroe, which is on the outskirts of Houston, at around 2:00 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 2.

“Patrol officers arrived quickly and discovered a white Kia Soul fully engulfed in flames,” the release read. “Several civilians had removed four occupants from the burning vehicle before emergency personnel arrived. All four victims were immediately transported to local area hospitals.”

While one of the passengers is described as being in “very critical condition,” the others are in “critical but stable condition.”

“Tragically, the 22-year-old driver and one passenger were unable to be rescued and were pronounced deceased at the scene,” authorities continued. “The Conroe Fire Department responded and extinguished the fire.”

PEOPLE has contacted the Conroe Police Department for further comment.

“The Conroe Police Department’s Traffic Fatality Reconstruction Unit responded and began investigating the cause of the crash,” the statement added. “Preliminary findings indicate that the Kia Soul was traveling westbound on White Oak Blvd at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway at an intersection and struck a tree head-on.”

Authorities say that speed and alcohol could have played “contributing factors” to the collision.

“Our first responders mourn alongside these families as they navigate this terribly difficult time. We are deeply grateful for the courageous actions of those who assisted removing the surviving victims,” Police Chief Jon Buckholtz said in a statement. “On behalf of the Conroe Police Department, we extend our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the victims and their families as they begin the long road to healing after this terrible morning.”
