A police officer and a civilian were killed Monday during an active shooting incident in Montreal’s Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, according to authorities.
A second officer was also seriously injured before the suspected gunman was "neutralized," per Montreal police, who issued an emergency alert warning residents about an “armed and dangerous suspect” in the area. The alert also instructed people to shelter indoors, lock their doors and stay away from windows.
In an update shared on X, police confirmed the suspect had been “neutralized” after two officers and a civilian were injured. Police later confirmed that one officer, one civilian and the suspect had died.
“It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty,” the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM) said in a statement.
The second officer was reported to be in stable condition Monday afternoon, according to The Canadian Press, the Montreal Gazette and CTV News Montreal.
Authorities do not believe any additional suspects were involved in the shooting, the outlets reported.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada offered condolences following the incident.
“My deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty in Côte-des-Neiges,” she wrote on X. “My thoughts are also with all those affected by this tragedy.”

Quebec Premier Christine Fréchette also shared her condolences.
“My thoughts are with the families of those who have died, the injured, the police force, and all those affected by this tragedy,” she wrote.
Police have not publicly identified the victims or the suspect. The investigation remains ongoing.
