A 2-year-old girl died after she was found in a swimming pool in Texas.
The Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office announced on social media that at around 6 p.m. local time on Friday, Sept. 18, authorities responded to reports of a child found in a swimming pool in the Humble area.
Nearby roads were shut to allow Life Flight to safely land, while locals were advised to avoid the area and expect delays.
“Please keep the child, the family and everyone involved in your prayers,” Constable Mark Herman wrote on X.

Several hours later, Herman announced that the child was flown to the hospital. There, she died, despite life-saving efforts.
“It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic update that the 2-year-old child has been pronounced deceased following an incident … where the child was found in a swimming pool,” he wrote on X.
“This is an unimaginable tragedy, and our hearts are with this child’s family during this incredibly difficult time,” continued Herman.
The police officer added, “We ask our community to keep the family, loved ones and everyone affected by this heartbreaking loss in their thoughts and prayers.”
Harris County officials have not publicly identified the 2-year-old child at this time.
According to KHOU 11, she was found in the backyard of a vacant home that is currently being remodeled.

“The grandmother was in the backyard with the children. She got distracted momentarily with one of the other children, [and] when she turned back around she didn’t see the 2-year-old, so they began looking,” an investigator told the outlet.
“It was only minutes when they decided to go next door because they know there’s a swimming pool and the door is always open. When they went over there, she was submerged in water,” they added.
Family members attempted CPR before officials rushed the child to Memorial Hermann Hospital, per KHOU 11.

A representative for the Harris County Precinct 4 Constable’s Office did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment on Saturday, Sept. 19.
